About the Role

After School Instructors work with groups of up to 20 students from TK to 8th grade, providing tutoring, homework assistance, and educational enrichment. Instructors must maintain high energy, excellent organizational and communication skills, and create a fun, organized atmosphere. They ensure seamless integration of Catalyst programs with school day activities by collaborating closely with school district staff and sharing classroom spaces.

Responsibilities

  • Provide tutoring and homework assistance to help students meet national standards.
  • Collaborate with the Site Coordinator to create and implement Catalyst ExpandEd Learning (ExL) curriculum, rules, and procedures, including new curriculum introduced during the school year.
  • Offer educational enrichment through positive youth development strategies, recreation, prevention activities, and teaching positive life skills.
  • Work collaboratively with internal (Catalyst ExL peers and Catalyst Kids) and external (District staff and teachers) team members.
  • Track students’ progress using programmatic protocols.
  • Ensure consistent supervision and a safe, supported environment for students; complete all necessary safety documentation, including injury reports and Unusual Incident Reports (UIRs).
  • Track daily attendance, including After School Enrichment & Safety (ASES) requirements where applicable.
  • Complete weekly lesson planning forms.
  • Maintain professionalism with students and families; relay feedback to the Site Coordinator to improve the program.
  • Attend regular staff and district meetings.
  • Support and participate in family and site-based events.
  • Assist other sites when needed due to staffing constraints.
  • Communicate regularly with the Site Coordinator regarding all aspects of the program.
  • Apply approved behavior management techniques to support children with challenging behaviors.
  • Undergo and maintain all assigned health, safety, education, and HR trainings, as well as district-required trainings.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance student learning.
  • Prepare and adapt classroom settings, including carrying and arranging furniture (up to 25 pounds) and educational materials.
  • Promote an inclusive environment of teamwork to ensure Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is practiced in department operations, programs, and services.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must meet school district’s requirements, which may include passing an exam or obtaining Paraprofessional certification.
  • College units in education, recreation, or child development are desired.
  • 6+ months’ experience working with children preferred.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to manage a classroom of up to 20 students (TK to 8th grade) independently.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to manage sensitive situations with discretion.
  • Understanding of behavior management and effective strategies for guiding student behavior.
  • Highly organized with exceptional interpersonal and partnering relationship skills.
  • Enthusiastic, motivated, and child-focused with proven leadership and team-building skills.
  • Excellent time management skills and flexibility.
  • Ability to meet state and district-specific requirements, including Fingerprint LIVE SCAN, CPR/First Aid Certification, Medical Certificate/Tuberculosis (TB) test, Mandated Reporter training, and Food Handlers Permit (where applicable).

Schedule

Part-time: Monday – Friday, 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM.
