About the Role

Mount Vernon School, established in 1972, serves over 1,250 students in Preschool through Grade 12 on a 40-acre Atlanta campus. Grounded in Christian values, the school prepares students to be college-ready, globally competitive, and engaged citizen leaders. The After Care Substitute role supports the Extended Play Team, which manages after-school programming for Pre-K2 (Age 2) through Grade 5. This position assists with indoor and outdoor projects, games, play, and general safety/supervision of Preschool and Lower School students (ages 5-7) between 2:30 pm - 6:00 pm, as needed. Substitutes are called on regularly but have the flexibility to accept or decline shifts, making this role ideal for someone seeking a flexible schedule while working with children.

Work occurs on the premises at Mount Vernon’s Lower Campus: 471 Mount Vernon Hwy NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain a safe and nurturing learning environment
  • Supervise children by sight and sound at all times
  • Facilitate interactive activities to engage students throughout the afternoon

Work Environment

  • Indoor/outdoor classroom environment
  • Outdoor natural learning spaces

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift up to 35 lbs. and engage in activities at the child’s level
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard office and classroom equipment
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time
  • Bending at the waist, kneeling, or crouching to assist children
  • Seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information
  • Reaching overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally

Requirements

  • Experience in a school, after-school, or camp environment preferred
  • Background or interest in the field of education preferred
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task and adapt to the needs of children
  • Strong interpersonal skills and sound judgment
  • Passion for working with young children

Schedule

Monday through Friday, 2:30 pm - 6:00 pm.
