About the role
SimIS, Inc. is seeking an Artificial Intelligence Developer Intern to develop and train AI tools that help automate processes for Aerospace/Aviation Machine Learning (ML) tool development.
Responsibilities
- Design and program AI systems
- Test ML tools and processes developed
- Work with autonomous systems and resolve issues with algorithms and data to ensure correct system operation
- Evaluate machine learning processes to enhance automation
- Collect and analyze large amounts of data to identify trends, ambiguities, and inconsistencies using data analytics
- Manage data, project infrastructure, and support the development of efficient AI software architecture
- Develop and deploy AI algorithms with an understanding of artificial intelligence principles
- Build containerized application tools following the 12 Factor App methodology, Test Driven Development (TDD), Continuous Integration / Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) concepts, and Extreme Programming (XP)
- Collaborate with team members to establish goals for AI processes
- Develop products as part of a balanced Agile development team including Product Manager, Product Owner, engineers, developers, cyber specialists, and scientists
- Drive technical feasibility for the product backlog
- Support the management of third-party cloud computing platforms, including architectural design, access controls, and cost-effective usage monitoring
- Implement cloud security measures (e.g., hardening, authentication, authorization)
- Use distributed learning specifications (e.g., SCORM, xAPI, Dublin Core)
- Work with virtualization software and virtualized server implementations
- Collaboratively develop and maintain software (e.g., via GitHub)
- Develop software technical documentation and user guides
- Find and fix software bugs
- Apply standard web security practices (e.g., SSL certificates, OAuth)
- Adopt industry best practices with a security-first mindset and understand DevSecOps principles
Requirements
- Program knowledge and experience with AI software utilizing large amounts of data
- Experience and/or knowledge in full-stack development (JavaScript/Python/Java/C/C++/C#), front-end development (e.g., React, Angular, HTML, HTML5, JS, CSS, SASS), back-end development (e.g., Node.js, Django/Flask, SpringBoot), and database design and programming (mySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB)
- Aptitude for math, statistics, and NASA’s core mission areas: aeronautics, exploration systems, science, space operations, and space technology
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency in coding languages and software programming
- Robust teamwork, communication, and collaboration skills
- Ambitious self-motivation and attention to detail
- Ability to learn new languages and frameworks quickly
- Fluent in English with strong written and oral communication skills
- Working towards a Bachelor of Science degree in a related field (e.g., computer science, engineering, mathematics, statistics, or data science)

- Experience with AI tools such as Tabnine, GitHub Copilot, CHATGBT, Google Bard, Perplexity AI, Claude, Cursor AI, Softr, Microsoft Power Apps, Codeium, Amazon CodeWhisperer, Quickbase, Airtable Cobuilder, Databutton, AutoNav, ExoMiner, MLNav, ASPEN, MAPGEN, Prithvi, and TensorFlow (desired)
- Staying up to date on the latest AI developments and understanding of data science
Schedule
- On-site position in Suffolk, VA
- Expected work schedule: 14 – 16 hours/week
- Some latitude to authorize work from home dependent on project assigned
