Advocate Counselor

About the role

This position provides direct supportive service and follow-up to program participants, assisting them in completing their high school education and creating a post-secondary plan. Documents delivery of contractual services such as academic support, job readiness, career exploration, attendance outreach, seminars, site information, counseling, and exposure to job readiness and career exploration. Develops materials and lessons to strengthen participant resiliency and knowledge. This position will serve as a liaison between parents, school, and students.

Responsibilities

• Oversee and work together with a School Guidance Counselor on caseloads.
• Conduct regular one-on-one sessions with caseload, at least twice a month.
• Develop student social intelligence through teaching Advisory/Community Gathering.
• Adapt the existing Advisory curriculum and lesson plans to meet students' developmental needs and build resiliency.
• Create and maintain a working alliance with students.
• Provide crisis counseling for caseload as needed.
• Conduct attendance outreach through phone calls, morning wake-up calls, letters, case conferencing, and/or home visits.
• Support tracking of students’ academic progress using report cards, progress reports, and periodic assessments.
• Help students define and develop realistic educational and career plans.
• Educate students and parents about colleges, the college admissions process, trends, procedures, and testing through workshops and/or individual counseling.
• Assist students in completing college and financial aid applications.
• Support the student admission process (outreach, open houses/intake interviews, new student orientation, parent orientations, among others).
• Input all services (attendance outreach, individual counseling, career and college advisement, tutoring, and other interventions) into provided systems for assigned caseload.
• Assess and refer students and family members to community-based support services.
• Assist students not participating in subsidized internships by providing non-paid community service or service-learning placements during the academic year, upon request.
• Track volunteering students and the number of hours completed.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field required.
• At least 1 year of experience working in the field of youth development.
• Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Schedule

Days and hours are generally Monday to Friday, 8 AM–4 PM. This is a full-time position that will require evening and occasional Saturday hours to monitor after-school and summer programs and attend special events.

Pay

$27.47 per hour.
