Advocacy and Policy Director

About the role

This position’s primary responsibilities will be developing a strategy and directing the organization’s advocacy community engagement programs and policy initiatives to further the mission and goals of NJBWC through creating better conditions and access for biking, walking and rolling that make New Jersey a safer, more sustainable and equitable place to live, work, and play.

Responsibilities

• Develop and lead a strategic plan for building a statewide advocacy network, including expanding the SAFE Network and establishing an Ambassador Program of community-based safety champions with regional representation.
• Create materials, tools, and opportunities for communication that empower local advocates in advancing initiatives for safer biking and walking, safer streets, and further opportunities for active transportation.
• Maintain program files and a contact database to support the development and ongoing management of the statewide Ambassador program.
• Represent NJBWC in partner coalitions, legislative hearings, and other policy-focused meetings and events, as determined in consultation with the Executive Director.
• Represent NJBWC in safe streets coalitions, conferences, local events, and meetings as assigned.
• Assist with other tasks as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree.
• Approximately 5 years of relevant experience, along with demonstrated knowledge across several of the following areas; active transportation, safe streets policies, urban planning, government relations, advocacy campaigns, mobility equity issues, and community engagement.
• Knowledge of government relations and legislation process.
• Knowledge of and experience with building organizational networks for social impact.
• Experience engaging with and positively impacting diverse communities.
• Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and build trust and maintain relationships with partners.
• Project management experience, including work plans and budgets.
• Excellent research, writing, and public speaking skills.
• Strong time-management skills, with the ability to meet goals and deadlines while working independently.
• Experience with web-based outreach tools such as Google Docs and WordPress.
• Proficiency in Excel and standard Microsoft Office programs.

Benefits

This is a full-time position with salary commensurate with experience. Benefits include 15 vacation days per year, sick days, flexible work schedule, paid travel expenses, health insurance available via group policy, and coverage of 80% of premium for medical and 30% for dental & vision for fulltime employees. STD (Short-Term Disability), Life, and LTD (Long-Term Disability).

Pay

Salary hiring range: $75,000 – 90,000 yearly.
