Advanced Practice Provider - Transplant Hepatology - Outpatient

About the role

Join our Transplant Hepatology team as a full-time Advanced Practice Provider (APP – NP or PA) providing specialized care across VCU Health locations, including Williamsburg, Charlottesville, and our main Richmond campus. The role includes eight clinical sessions per week, with two half-day sessions in Williamsburg, two in Charlottesville, one post-discharge Liver Transplant clinic session at Gateway 7, and approximately three additional sessions based on departmental needs. Mileage reimbursement is provided for travel between locations, and clinical schedules are adjusted to account for travel time.

Responsibilities

• Provide high-quality medical and/or surgical patient care to patients with acute and chronic complaints in collaboration with the Attending Physician.
• Perform histories and physicals; order and interpret tests; make diagnoses; treat injuries/illness; assist with surgical procedures; counsel patients; and prescribe medication within the Virginia Board of Medicine scope of practice.
• Coordinate patient care across the continuum of services through the patient’s trajectory of illness.
• Assess health status via health histories, physical examinations, screening, diagnostic tests, direct patient care, therapeutic interventions, and medication prescribing.
• Initiate emergency procedures as needed and practice safety, environmental, and infection control methods.
• Make rounds with attending physicians, supervise and/or coordinate patient care and support staff, and document all pertinent information in the medical record.
• Develop treatment plans based on history and physical findings, formulate and prioritize short- and long-term therapeutic plans, and incorporate physical, spiritual, cultural, and psychosocial aspects of patients and families.
• Explore strategies to decrease length of stay and resource consumption; establish priorities to meet health needs of individuals, families, or communities.
• Maintain effective communication about patient care with all healthcare team members to ensure coordinated care and assist with coordination between primary and specialty services.
• Serve as a consultant to other healthcare professionals, act as a liaison and negotiator for staff, patients, and families, and collaborate in the development, implementation, and monitoring of multidisciplinary care plans for complex patients.
• Provide patient and family education, may train residents, fellows, and other staff, and participate in the continual assessment and revision of practices and procedures.
• Utilize current research to develop, implement, and evaluate critical paths and standards of care; contribute to the profession through research, publications, consultation, and/or educational activities; support clinical trials.
• Incorporate clinical judgment in ethical decision-making, practice ethical principles, and promote interdisciplinary collaboration to resolve ethical dilemmas.
• Seek professional growth through organizational affiliations, function collaboratively with physicians and allied health professionals, assess learning needs, and develop and implement a plan for professional growth.
• Enhance professional development through educational programs, literature, in-services, workshops, teaching programs, and continuing education to maintain competencies and meet recertification requirements.
• Perform other duties as assigned, provide assistance to team members, and accept alternate assignments as required.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife, or Physician Assistant Program.
• Current Virginia licensure as a Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife, or Physician Assistant.
• Current national certification appropriate for the role.
• Credentialing in accordance with medical staff bylaws for the specific job title.
• Current CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications; additional certifications such as ACLS or PALS may be required based on departmental needs.
• Previous clinical experience with the population served.

Preferred Qualifications

• Service-specific certification.
• Three years of previous clinical experience with the population served.
• Previous experience in an academic healthcare system.

Work Environment

• Physical demands include lifting/carrying up to 100+ lbs., stooping, kneeling, squatting, crawling, climbing, balance, bending, sitting, walking, and standing.
• Requires manual dexterity, eye/hand coordination, shift work, maneuvering weight of patients, hearing alarms/telephone, reaching above shoulder, repetitive arm/hand movements, finger dexterity, color vision, and near/far acuity.
• Hazards include exposure to toxic/caustic chemicals, moving mechanical parts, dust/fumes, potential electrical shock, x-ray/electromagnetic energy, high-pitched noises, and gaseous risk exposure.
• Mental/sensory demands include strong recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, clear speech, legible writing, reading, and logical thinking in a fast-paced, noisy environment with frequent and intense customer interactions.
• Emotional demands include handling multiple priorities, adapting to frequent change, and working in a steady-paced environment.

Pay

• APP – Ambulatory: $127,595.60 – $154,073.84
• APP – Hospital: $130,408.90 – $155,200.02
• APP – Critical Care: $137,327.32 – $165,786.33
• APP – Cardiothoracic Surgery: $141,620.36 – $176,276.81
• Actual salary offers will be based on relevant work experience, credentials, and qualifications.
