Advanced Practice Provider Supervisor - Clinical Cancer Prevention
About the Role
The Advanced Practice Provider Lead provides administrative leadership and clinical expertise for the outpatient Advanced Practice Provider team within the Cancer Prevention Center. The Advanced Practice Provider Lead supervises operational activities, staffing coordination, onboarding, and quality-focused initiatives while maintaining an active clinical practice. The Advanced Practice Provider Lead supports continuity of care across the clinical enterprise and partners with leadership to advance patient-centered cancer prevention services at UT MD Anderson.
Summary
Provides administrative leadership for the outpatient Advanced Practice Provider (APP) team within the Cancer Prevention Center, including supervision, planning, and coordination of clinical operations. Maintains an active clinical practice, consistent with licensure and in a proportion aligned with team needs and departmental approval. Ensures all required licensure, certifications, and continuing education are kept current in accordance with regulatory and institutional standards. Supervises the administrative and operational coordination of the Cancer Prevention Center APP team, including operations, staffing, planning, budgeting, quality assurance, and the administration of activities and personnel that influence clinical operations.
Clinical Practice and Patient Care
- Maintains a 60% weekly clinical effort within the Cancer Prevention clinical enterprise.
- Under the direction of the CMD, coordinate coverage for unexpected APP/Faculty outages across the CCP enterprise.
- Provides in-person clinic coverage across the enterprise during unexpected staffing outages or when team members are unable to cover.
- Demonstrates population-based competencies, including age-specific and patient-centered skills, across the continuum of care.
- Functions within the defined professional scope of practice.
- Serves as a clinical resource for the management of cancer prevention, survivorship, and undiagnosed patient populations.
- Independently delivers appropriate clinical expertise in cancer prevention.
- Provides direct patient care in the Cancer Prevention Center, including screening, undiagnosed breast services, survivorship care, and patient/family education.
- Interprets screening results, diagnostic tests, and risk-stratification tools to inform evidence-based recommendations.
- Educates patients, families, community members, and healthcare professionals on cancer risk factors, lifestyle modification, screening guidelines, and risk-reduction strategies.
- Participates in triage of abnormal results, urgent concerns, and complex cases requiring escalation.
- Supports continuity of care by coordinating referrals, follow-up scheduling, and navigation through prevention and survivorship programs.
- Upholds quality and safety standards in all patient interactions, ensuring adherence to institutional protocols and national screening guidelines.
- Performs waived testing and provider-performed microscopy procedures (PPMD) and maintains required CLIA-mandated competency.
Supervision and Leadership
- Provide back-up coverage and administrative support for the APP Supervisor during periods of PTO, ensuring continuity of operations.
- Ensures adequate staffing is in place by developing and managing the daily staffing plan.
- Oversee training, mentoring and onboarding of new APPs and other clinical staff.
- Review and approve leave requests and ensure coverage during institutional holidays.
- Develop and maintain the on call schedule.
- Assign patient/In Basket coverage during APP absences or following provider departures.
- Lead the interviewing and hiring process for new mid-level providers.
- Assist in developing, updating, and delivering APP orientation programs.
- Maintain and update APP orientation and practice requirements in TEAMS.
- Assist CMD and partner with APP Supervisor to develop, review and update policies and procedures for day to day inpatient clinical practice operations.
- Support development and monitoring of staff compliance with credentialing, education, and training requirements.
- Review and assign APPs to evaluate cancer screening/survivorship algorithms and patient education materials.
- Review PAC/PAS consult inquiries to ensure patient appropriateness for CPC and UDB.
- Maintain current knowledge of clinical research practices and departmental protocol priorities.
- Provide guidance to mid-level providers on managing protocol related assessments and ensure compliance with federal, state, and institutional standards.
- Travels between clinic and off-site locations to attend meetings, provide services, and pick up or deliver necessary documents and materials.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Education
Degree requirements as defined by the Texas State Board Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) or Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners (TSBNE), as required for clinical licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant.
Required Work Experience
Two years experience as advanced practice provider.

Preferred Qualifications
- 3-5 years of experience as an Advanced Practice Provider in primary care, obstetrics and gynecology care, and outpatient settings.
- Experience performing breast examinations, pelvic examinations, Pap tests, and prostate examinations.
- Oncology experience.
- BLS - Basic Life Support American Heart Association Basic Life Support Upon Hire.
- PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification as required by patient care area. Upon Hire.
Other Requirements
Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources. This position may be responsible for maintaining the security and integrity of critical infrastructure, as defined in Section 113.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code and therefore may require routine reviews and screening. The ability to satisfy and maintain all requirements necessary to ensure the continued security and integrity of such infrastructure is a condition of hire and continued employment.
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8 hours day, 3 days of clinic, 2 administrative days. This position requires travel between multiple designated clinic sites, such as The Woodlands, NW Houston, Missouri City, League City, TMC and DIWH.
Salary Range
$129,000 - $161,500 - $194,000
