Advanced Practice Provider - Plastic Surgery

We are seeking an Advanced Practice Provider to join our collaborative Plastic Surgery team. This role involves outpatient clinic, inpatient care, and operating room activities, tailored to your experience and skill set. The position is Monday–Friday with no call, nights, weekends, or holiday coverage.

About the Role

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP - NP, PA) delivers high-quality medical and/or surgical patient care in collaboration with the Attending Physician. Responsibilities include:

• Providing diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive healthcare services
• Performing histories and physicals, ordering and interpreting tests, diagnosing and treating injuries/illnesses
• Assisting with surgical procedures, counseling patients, and prescribing medications
• Performing invasive procedures as defined by the Virginia Board of Medicine
• Delivering organized, timely, cost-effective, and quality patient care under a defined scope of practice

Responsibilities

Clinical & Patient Care

• Demonstrate mastery of treatment and patient care for the specialty population
• Coordinate patient care across the continuum of services through the patient’s trajectory of illness
• Assess health status through histories, physical examinations, and diagnostic tests
• Provide direct patient care, assist with surgical procedures, and prescribe medications
• Initiate emergency procedures as needed and practice safety, environmental, and infection control methods
• Make rounds with attending physicians and supervise/coordinate patient care and support staff
• Document all pertinent information in the patient’s medical record and interpret findings to develop treatment plans
• Formulate and prioritize short-term and long-term therapeutic plans, incorporating physical, spiritual, cultural, and psychosocial aspects of care
• Develop strategies to decrease length of stay and resource consumption
• Maintain effective communication with the healthcare team to coordinate care
• Assist with care coordination between primary and specialty services

Consultation

• Serve as a consultant to healthcare professionals on routine and unusual therapeutic interventions
• Act as a liaison and negotiator for staff, patients, and families
• Collaborate in developing, implementing, and monitoring multidisciplinary care plans for complex patients
• Provide patient and family education and training to residents, fellows, and healthcare staff
• Participate in the assessment and revision of practices and procedures in the specialty area
• Promote teamwork through effective communication and feedback

Research

• Utilize current research to develop, implement, and evaluate critical paths and standards of care
• Contribute to the profession through research, publications, consultation, and educational activities
• Demonstrate knowledge and support for clinical trials within the specialty area

Ethical Decision Making

• Incorporate clinical judgment in ethical decision-making
• Practice principles of ethics in patient care decisions
• Promote interdisciplinary collaborative processes to resolve ethical dilemmas
• Use negotiation, mediation, collaboration, compromise, and accommodation skills to assist families with ethical decisions

• Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission of VCU Health
• Provide assistance to team members and accept alternate assignments as required

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife, or Physician Assistant Program
• Current Virginia licensure as a Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife, or Physician Assistant
• Current national certification appropriate for the role
• Credentialing in accordance with medical staff by-laws for specific job titles
• Current CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications; additional certifications (e.g., ACLS, PALS) may be required at the department level

Qualifications

• Previous clinical experience with the population served
• Cultural responsiveness
• Preferred: Three years of clinical experience with the population served
• Preferred: Experience in an academic healthcare system
