About the role

The University of Chicago Medicine offers advanced surgical solutions for various heart conditions. Our Cardiac Surgery department is led by internationally renowned surgeons who pioneer new procedures. This position involves comprehensive patient care and operating room support.

Responsibilities

  • Gathers pertinent information from all sources and differentiates normal from abnormal variations.
  • First assists the cardiac surgeon during all procedures, including endoscopic vein harvesting and percutaneous intra-aortic balloon placement.
  • Accurately and appropriately performs routine diagnostic and therapeutic techniques according to established protocols.
  • Assesses patient and family adaptation, coping skills, and identifies the need for crisis intervention.
  • Analyzes diagnostic test results and makes clinical judgments.
  • Develops problem lists with associated differential diagnoses.
  • Performs bedside procedures as needed and incorporates assessment findings into a care plan.
  • Assists in inpatient care and consultation services as required.
  • Plans and implements appropriate pharmacological therapies.
  • Initiates referrals and seeks appropriate consultations based on patient needs.
  • Promotes and utilizes appropriate patient care protocols.
  • Participates in research projects in the practice area.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program.
  • Certification by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Current and/or eligibility for State of Illinois licensure/registration.
  • Certification in ACLS.
  • Experience using automated IS including keyboards, computer terminals, telephones, and automated dispensing machines.

Qualifications

  • Autonomous decision-making in the assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of delegated medical treatments.
  • Collaboration with medical and surgical physicians and other team members.
  • Planning, organizing, and directing patient care efforts.
  • Knowledge of and utilization of appropriate patient care protocols.

Benefits

Eligible for a Sign-On Bonus up to $10,000.00.
