Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA): Orthopaedic Surgery

Indian River Hospital is seeking a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner (RNFA) to join our expanding Orthopaedic Surgery team.

About the role

This position involves OR first assist, clinic procedures (joint injections/aspirations), pre- and post-operative care, hospital consultations, rounds, and a shared on-call rotation. Schedule is Monday through Friday with call requirements. Both experienced providers and newly licensed candidates with relevant clinical rotations are welcome.

Responsibilities

• Conduct thorough medical histories and complete physical examinations.
• Initiate and interpret lab, radiology, and other diagnostic tests to establish patient health status and treatment plans.
• Perform routine and specialized procedures as credentialed and privileged by the Medical Executive Committee and hospital Governing Body.
• Prescribe and monitor medications as allowed by licensure and organizational policies.
• Educate patients on diseases, treatments, drug side effects, and hazards.
• Participate in medical team rounds and collaborate with healthcare team members.
• Refer patients to specialists for consultation or specialized treatment.
• Ensure continuity of care as a liaison between patients and the multi-disciplinary care team.
• Review records and treatment plans to monitor and ensure quality patient outcomes.
• Facilitate appropriate length of stay, discharge planning, and compliance with regulatory standards.
• Support professional development of the healthcare team and promote evidence-based practices.
• May conduct research studies, assist in data collection, and serve as a clinical preceptor for students.
• Onboard new caregivers and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Nationally certified Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant).
• Functions in collaboration with the healthcare team in accordance with certification and licensure.
• Emphasis on health promotion, disease prevention, and diagnosis/treatment of acute and chronic health problems.
• Responsible for disseminating knowledge through instruction, leadership, and educational program development.

Qualifications

Education

• Nurse Practitioner: Graduate of an accredited APRN program. MSN required upon hire or within 3 years for external hires and internal transitions to APRN roles. If in neonatal care, Master’s Degree is required upon hire.
• Physician Assistant: Graduate of an ARC-approved Physician Assistant Program. Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies or higher from a program recognized by the practicing state’s Licensing Board.

Certifications & Licensure

• Nurse Practitioner:
  • Licensed as a Nurse Practitioner and RN in applicable state(s).
  • National certification as a Nurse Practitioner by a state-recognized, nationally accredited organization.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) may be required based on work setting.
  • Must have arrangements with at least one physician as required by the State Board of Nursing.
  • Must be credentialed and privileged by the Medical Executive Committee and hospital Governing Body.
• Physician Assistant:
  • Certification as a Physician Assistant through the NCCPA or successor organization.
  • License to practice and prescribe issued by the practicing state’s Licensing Board.
  • Current DEA License or DEA designee as required by NCQA.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • ACLS, PALS, NRP, or Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) may be required based on work setting.
  • Must have a Physician Supervision Agreement and signed addendum.
  • Must be credentialed and privileged by the Medical Executive Committee and hospital Governing Body.

Work Experience

Related clinical experience preferred, but newly licensed candidates with relevant rotations are welcome to apply.

Languages

Oral and written communication in English.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to walk and stand for long periods.
• Manual and finger dexterity and eye/hand coordination for physical examinations.
• Corrected vision and hearing to a normal range.
• Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds.
• May require exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids.
