Advanced Practice Provider (NP II or PA Il) - NIH/NIAID - Part Time

This position is part-time, 32 hours per week, located at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. The role supports the Universal Influenza projects for the Division of Intramural Research (DIR), National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

About the Role

The Frederick National Laboratory, operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc., addresses critical biomedical challenges in cancer, AIDS, drug development, nanotechnology, and infectious diseases. The Clinical Research Directorate (CRD) provides high-quality clinical research support to NIH initiatives, including NCI, NIAID, NHLBI, and others. This role involves delivering clinical research services as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) within a collaborative and mission-driven environment.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with attending physicians to assess clients' general health status through observation and screening procedures.
• Acquire client data via health history, including family and social information.
• Perform comprehensive physical assessments and document findings per institutional and protocol standards.
• Provide patient education on health status, disease understanding, and optimal performance.
• Assist the Principal Investigator (PI) in ensuring informed consent and obtaining written consent for treatment.
• Assess study patients for complications, document findings, and communicate with the PI.
• Provide protocol-driven and clinically indicated medical interventions.
• Facilitate care continuity across healthcare settings (NIH Clinical Center and external providers).
• Manage referrals to specialists as needed.
• Screen new participant calls and perform phone triage for active participants.
• Order and interpret radiological studies and lab tests following protocols and guidelines.
• Explain care management and discharge plans to the covering team.
• Attend new participant consultations with the PI to explain protocols and establish rapport.
• Serve as an Associate Investigator (AI).
• Assist with protocol development, lifecycle management, and coordination with external providers for screening and enrollment.
• Obtain consent for clinical trial enrollment and assist with data collection and management.
• Support sample procurement and processing.
• Disseminate research outcomes through publications, conference presentations, and staff trainings.
• Participate in clinical rounds, protocol meetings, and assume administrative responsibilities as needed.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university (or 4 years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
• Minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.
• For Physician Assistants:
  • Graduate from an ARC-PA-accredited physician assistant program.
  • Successful completion of the NCCPA examination.
  • Maryland State Board eligibility for licensure.
• For Nurse Practitioners:
  • Degree/certificate from a state-approved professional nursing program.
  • Active, current RN registration in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
  • Certification from AANP or ANCC as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Maryland State Board eligibility for licensure.
• Documentation of pending Maryland license.
• Knowledge of disease relationships, health assessment, counseling, diagnostic testing, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and primary medical management.
• Ability to conduct studies according to FDA Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Clinical Center Administrative Policies.
• Working knowledge of prevention, etiology, therapies, and new research developments.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

• Working knowledge of ICH/GCP guidelines, clinical research concepts, ethics, and protocol implementation.
• Experience with clinical trials, particularly in vaccine or healthy volunteer studies.
• Prior clinical experience with infectious diseases.

Schedule

• Part-time, 32 hours per week.
• On-site Monday through Friday, generally 8 AM – 2 PM, excluding Federal holidays.
• One weekend day per month (2–4 hours on Saturday or Sunday).
• Ad hoc telework as determined by team and participant needs.

Pay

The posted pay range for this position is $102,300.00 – $146,483.00 USD (full-time equivalent). Compensation varies based on scheduled hours, responsibilities, education, experience, and internal equity.
