Advanced Practice Provider - Hematology and Oncology - Mobile Oncology Unit

VCU Health’s Division of Hematology and Oncology is seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to join its multidisciplinary team, supporting both the new Chesterfield Pavilion ambulatory practice and the Mobile Oncology Unit. This role provides comprehensive oncology care, including patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, care coordination, education, and supervision of chemotherapy infusions. The APP will travel from Richmond to rural FQHC locations across Virginia as part of the Mobile Oncology Unit, collaborating with VCU Health oncology physicians through onsite and telehealth visits to expand access to high-quality cancer care. The mobile unit features 3–4 chemotherapy treatment chairs, an exam room, and telehealth capabilities. Expected mobile clinic hours are approximately 9:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m., with travel time to and from each site; hours may vary based on location and clinic needs.

Responsibilities

• Provide high-quality medical and/or surgical patient care, including histories and physicals, diagnostic test interpretation, diagnosis, treatment of injuries/illnesses, and counseling or prescribing medication.
• Perform or assist with surgical procedures and those invasive procedures defined by the Virginia Board of Medicine.
• Assess health status through patient histories, physical examinations, and diagnostic tests; develop and prioritize short-term and long-term therapeutic plans.
• Incorporate physical, spiritual, cultural, and psychosocial aspects into patient care plans to promote optimum health.
• Initiate emergency procedures as needed and practice safety, environmental, and infection control methods.
• Supervise and coordinate activities of patient care and support staff; document all pertinent information in patient medical records.
• Collaborate with attending physicians, making rounds as necessary, and maintain effective communication with the healthcare team to ensure coordinated care.
• Explore strategies to decrease length of stay and resource consumption within the specialty area.
• Function as a consultant to healthcare professionals regarding routine and unusual therapeutic interventions; serve as a liaison for staff, patients, and families.
• Collaborate in developing, implementing, and monitoring multidisciplinary care plans for complex patients.
• Provide patient, family, or caregiver education and share responsibility for patient education.
• Train residents, fellows, and other healthcare staff in the specialty area as needed.
• Utilize current research to develop, implement, and evaluate critical paths and standards of care for the identified patient population.
• Contribute to the profession through participation in research, publications, consultation, and educational activities.
• Demonstrate knowledge and support for clinical trials within the specialty area.
• Incorporate clinical judgment in ethical decision-making and promote interdisciplinary collaborative processes to resolve ethical dilemmas.
• Assess own learning needs and develop a plan for professional growth through educational programs, literature, workshops, and organizational affiliations.
• Participate in continuing education to maintain competencies and meet re-certification requirements.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission of VCU Health.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife, or Physician Assistant Program.
• Current Virginia licensure as a Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife, or Physician Assistant.
• Current national certification appropriate for the role.
• Credentialing in accordance with medical staff by-laws for specific job titles.
• Current CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications; additional certifications (e.g., ACLS, PALS) may be required at the department level.

Qualifications

• Previous clinical experience with the population served.
• Cultural responsiveness.
• Preferred: Three years of previous clinical experience with the population served.
• Preferred: Previous experience in an academic healthcare system.

Working Conditions

• Physical demands include lifting/carrying (0–100+ lbs), pushing/pulling (0–100 lbs), stooping, kneeling, squatting, crawling, climbing, and balancing.
• Work positions include sitting, walking, and standing.
• Additional physical requirements: manual dexterity, maneuvering patient weight, hearing alarms/telephones, reaching above shoulder, repetitive arm/hand movements, finger dexterity, color vision, near/far acuity.
• Hazards: depth perception, use of latex gloves, exposure to toxic/caustic chemicals, moving mechanical parts, dust/fumes, potential electrical shock, x-ray/electromagnetic energy, high-pitched noises, gaseous risks.
