Advanced Practice Provider Fellow - Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC)

Department SOM KC – The Alzheimer's Disease Center (ADC) at the University of Kansas is a National Institute of Aging P30-designated national leader in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) research. Our vision is to impact the lives of every patient and family dealing with Alzheimer’s in the region and across Kansas through research, education, and clinical care. As a comprehensive center, we are at the forefront of clinical trials, lifestyle intervention trials, drug and translational research, and basic science research. Our work enables leading-edge clinical care and support for dementia caregivers, along with public education and workforce training opportunities.

The KU ADRC is expanding its training programs to develop the next generation of clinicians to address the growing burden of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) in an aging population. Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) play a critical role in diagnosing and treating these neurodegenerative diseases. The APP Fellowship Program aims to train APRNs in dementia diagnosis and treatment to meet the needs of this vulnerable population at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) and across the Midwest.

About the role

The APP Fellowship Program provides APRNs with six (6) months of intensive training in the clinical skills needed to diagnose and treat individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders (ADRD). Fellows will provide care in the Memory Care Clinic alongside physicians and APP mentors, participating in observational and learning opportunities including current ADRD treatments, neuropsychology, neuroimaging, biomarkers, social work support, end-of-life care planning, and research. Fellows must maintain medical staff privileges at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Responsibilities

• Gather comprehensive patient history.
• Complete comprehensive physical and neurological examinations.
• Order and analyze appropriate diagnostic studies.
• Formulate and implement treatment plans.
• Evaluate patients’ response to treatment.
• Coordinate patient care.
• Participate within the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
• Participate in the implementation of patient education and clinical support programs to ensure optimal care throughout the healthcare continuum.
• Prepare concise verbal case presentations to discuss with mentors.
• Participate in didactic sessions.
• Engage in specialty clinic rotations.

Requirements

• Master's degree from an accredited nurse practitioner (NP) program.
• Current licensure in the state of Kansas and Missouri as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse.
• Certification through an approved credentialing center (e.g., American Nursing Credentialing Center or American Nurses Credentialing Center).
• Current certification of basic life support (BLS).
• Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) number.
• Experience working with people.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience having difficult health-related conversations.
• Bilingual proficiency in Spanish.
• Strong communication skills.

Pay

The pay range for this position is $92,800.00 - $139,200.00, with a starting pay range estimated at the minimum to midpoint ($92,800.00 - $116,000.00). Compensation is determined using market data, benchmarking, and factors such as education, experience, qualifications, and funding.
