About The Department
The Section of Colon & Rectal Surgery features faculty and staff who tackle complex cases of inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer, diverticulitis and pelvic floor disorders. UChicago Medicine is nationally recognized for our surgeons' expertise in complicated benign and malignant disorders of the colon, rectum and anus. We are at the forefront of surgical innovation and highly skilled in minimally invasive surgical techniques such as advanced laparoscopic surgery, transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM), robotic surgery and endoscopic procedures. The section's educational endeavors focus on training the next generation of colon and rectal surgeons. The colon and rectal surgery fellowship program trains surgeons in the multidisciplinary care of patients with colon and rectal pathologies, provides opportunities for high quality research, and prepares the surgeons for pursuit of academic careers.
Job Summary
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) within the Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery plays a key role in the care of patients admitted to the Colon and Rectal Surgery service. This role includes conducting daily rounds, managing post-operative and medical issues, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, facilitating discharges, documentation, and collaborating closely with attending surgeons, trainees, nursing staff, and ancillary services to optimize patient outcomes. The APP will also scrub into the OR on occasion to support the overall service. The position also has the opportunity to rotate to the ambulatory setting seeing post operative and new patients. The role will also work collaboratively with other APPs in the department and cross coverage with other surgical services.
Responsibilities
- Assists the physician/surgeon through organized instruction and supervised practice.
- Operating room, inpatient, and outpatient management of colorectal surgery patients.
- Takes patient histories, conducts examinations, diagnoses illnesses, orders and interprets laboratory tests, performs specified diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, develops and implements comprehensive care plans, outpatient communication with patients, and assist in the operating room.
- Assists in the team effort to expedite the start of surgery in the OR.
- Performs patient follow up in the outpatient setting with communication to community health care providers assuring appropriate transitions of care and follow-up.
- Works with nurses to address patient inquires via email, EPIC, or phone.
- Participates in inpatient management of colorectal surgery patient alongside surgery residents, including floor rounds, consults, charting, orders, communication with consulting teams and patient discharge.
- Collaborates with staff, case managers and the Clinical Program Manager to coordinate patient and family education needs.
- Participates in and coordinates in patient care conferences.
