Park Nicollet Clinic & RHSC is seeking a full-time Physician Assistant to join our Cardiology department. You will have an impact on the care that our patients receive every day.
Responsibilities
- First assist in adult cardiac and thoracic as well as robotic procedures
- Partner in perioperative and postoperative care
- Inpatient rounding and call coverage (currently 1 in 4, on average)
- Clinic duties as needed
- In the operating room:
- Positioning of the patient
- Endoscopic vein harvest
- First assisting the surgeon at the chest
- Wound closure
- Assisting with safe transport to the ICU
- Inpatient services:
- Coordinate flow of inpatient service (10%):
- Review daily patient lists and prioritize consultations and rounding schedule
- Develop and review work plan with rounding physician partner
- Communicate with partner inpatient APP to balance workloads
- Assist in assignment of residents and students
- Discuss and develop diagnosis and treatment plans with staff cardiologists
- Assess and complete H&P on new consults (20%):
- Order diagnostic testing
- Evaluate treatment and communicate with physician partner
- Design follow-up plans for clinic visits post-discharge
- Document assessment, treatment, evaluation, and follow-up in EMR
- Educate patient/family on treatment and follow-up
- Interact with patients and family members (10%):
- Involve them in the plan of care
- Provide education on diagnosis and treatment
- Document education in EMR and provide written instructions
- Prescribe medications
- Evaluate interventions and plan of care for efficacy
- Review diagnostic results and communicate with partner cardiologist (5%)
- Review patients at end of day with physician partner and modify plans as needed
- Sign out patients to APP partner when cross-covering
- Communicate hospital course and treatment plan to referring primary care physicians upon discharge (5%)
- Coordinate flow of inpatient service (10%):
- Cardiology Clinic (45%):
- Evaluate and treat patients independently (revisits) and staff new patients with NIVL cardiologist
- Prescribe medications, order tests and procedures
- Document clinic visits in EMR
- Manage in-basket, follow up on test/procedure results
- Communicate with other healthcare professionals regarding mutual patients
- Collaborate and coordinate with other health professionals (5%):
- Make and accept referrals to/from other healthcare providers
- Discriminate between situations requiring independent management, collaborative management, or referral
- Collaborate with physician for unusual incidents or changes in patient condition
- Coordinate care involving other healthcare providers
- Function as mentor/resource and educator for other healthcare team members
Requirements
- Current unrestricted medical license as a Physician Assistant
- Current BLS certification
- Current ACLS certification
- Current DEA certification (verified during credentialing process)
- If a Physician Assistant:
- Licensed as a PA with the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice
- NCCPA certification
- Approved by Minnesota Board of Medical Practice for prescription writing privileges (verified during credentialing process)
- If a Nurse Practitioner:
- Currently licensed as an APRN by the Minnesota Board of Nursing
- Currently licensed as an RN by the Minnesota Board of Nursing
- AANP Certification
- Ability to:
- Perform as part of a team
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Work dependently and independently
- Manage multiple simultaneous tasks and prioritize appropriately
- Navigate an electronic medical record
Preferred Qualifications
- 1-2 years of experience in the cardiovascular surgery (OR) environment, including first assisting and/or vein harvesting
- Experience as an independently practicing APP
- 1-2 years of previous cardiology experience

Physical Requirements
- Work environment includes inpatient nursing units and clinic settings
- Stand 4-6 hours and walk 2-4 hours daily
- View a computer screen for up to 3 hours a day
- Lift, push, or pull equipment up to 50 lbs
- Transport self throughout the hospital
- Perform tasks requiring fine motor skills and hand/eye coordination
- May be exposed to hazardous substances, harmful physical agents, and infectious agents in the patient care area
- May be exposed to printer/copier cartridges in the office environment
- Equipment used includes:
- Office: computer, fax, printer, copy machine
- Patient care: needles, syringes, vital sign monitors, hemodynamic lines
