Job Description

APP provides care in a variety of settings served by Tennessee Oncology. The role includes assessing, diagnosing, and managing cancer or related disorders under the guidance of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Essential Functions

  • Clinical Assessment: Obtains and documents comprehensive health history, performs and documents physical exams, assesses symptoms, orders and interprets ancillary data, prioritizes findings, identifies clinical trial eligibility, relays information to collaborating physician, writes prescriptions, administers therapeutic measures, manages symptoms, refers for consultations.
  • Care Coordination: Communicates care plan to patient and caregivers, manages family dynamics and coping mechanisms, serves as a resource to the healthcare team, evaluates and improves care quality.
  • Call Coverage: Responds to patient/family calls, rounds in hospital, admits patients, contacts supervising physician for backup, maintains certifications.
  • Teaching: Educates patients and families on treatment plans, facilitates decision-making about discontinuing active cancer treatment, educates cancer survivors, participates in developing and presenting educational materials, supports community discussions and support groups.
  • Communication: Reports patient information accurately and timely, edits dictation, collaborates with other health disciplines, represents APP in meetings, shares information with APP group.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of oncology and primary care.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Knowledge of Tennessee Oncology Advanced Practice Provider Guidelines.
  • Knowledge of the Advanced Practice Practitioner as outlined in the Tennessee Oncology Policy and Procedure Manual.
  • Tennessee Oncology skills certification as required by the APP's specific clinic.

Education & Experience

  • License to practice as RN or PA in the state of Tennessee required.
  • Master’s degree in nursing or certification as a Physician Assistant required.
  • National certification as APP (American Nurses' Credentialing Center or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners) or Clinical Nurse Specialist who meets criteria for certificate of fitness to prescribe medications, including AOCN, AOCNP, AOCNS or Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants required.
  • One year oncology nurse experience preferred - APPs without oncology experience are expected to work as a staff nurse for a minimum of 1 month before transitioning into APP role.
  • Registered Nurse experience required for APPs without sufficient experience as a Registered Nurse.

Physical Requirements

  • Willingness and ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Able to remain upright on the feet most of the time.
  • Able to remain in a stationary position half of the time.
  • Able to communicate, distinguish sounds, and visualize.
  • Occasional reaching, stretching, crouching, and stooping.
