About the role

The position involves evaluating and treating patients with acute and chronic complaints related to oncology and hematology. The incumbent will perform physical exams, administer medications, order diagnostic tests, and assist in surgical procedures under the supervision of a physician.

Responsibilities

• Evaluates and treats patients with acute, chronic complaints and health maintenance concerns related to specialty.
• Performs or requests and evaluates diagnostic studies as indicated upon evaluation of the patient.
• Administers medications according to the formulary protocol or upon patient-specific approval from the supervising physician.
• Orders and collects specimens for routine laboratory tests, screening procedures and therapeutic procedures, including blood and blood products.
• Performs designated procedures after demonstrated competency, according to written standardized procedures where applicable.
• Initiates arrangements for hospital admissions and discharges and completes appropriate paperwork.
• Enrolls patients in investigational studies approved by the Investigational Review Board (IRB), and orders the necessary tests and medications.
• Aids the supervising physician in the operating room (OR).
• Assists the supervising physician in surgical procedures in the personal presence of the supervising physician.
• Recognizes and considers age-specific needs of patients.
• Communicates and interacts with patients, families, staff and members of the community from diverse backgrounds.
• Recognizes situations which require the immediate attention of a physician, and initiates life-saving procedures when necessary.
• Facilitates the coordination of inpatient and outpatient care and services as needed.
• Facilitates collaboration between providers and coordination of community resources.
• Ensures compliance with legal, regulatory and clinical policies and procedures.
• Participates in quality improvement initiatives.
• Provides and coordinates patient teaching and counseling.

Requirements

• Experience in Hematology/Oncology independently managing Oncology patients with acute medical diagnoses and complications from their treatment or their cancer (minimum of 1 year working autonomously in Heme/Onc).
• BLS certification.
• Proficiency and understanding of cancer diagnoses and their treatment options.
• APSHO Cancer Therapy Prescribing Course proficiency.
• Proficiency in EPIC Electronic Health Record.
• Prior procedure proficiency (e.g. bone marrow biopsy, paracentesis, lumbar puncture, drain management, wound care, CORTRAK NG tube insertion).

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or above from an accredited college or university.
• Graduate of a PA program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc.
• State Licensure and BLS - Basic Life Support and DEA - Drug Enforcement Administration.

Skills

• Ability to manage a panel of 6 patients/day.
• Proven experience in managing acute oncology-related concerns.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Knowledge of cancer diagnoses and treatment options.
• Proficiency in EPIC Electronic Health Record.
• Experience with various oncology procedures.
