Advanced Practice Provider/Advanced Practice Nurse

About the role

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Chicago has 114 clinical providers, serving over 60,000 outpatient visits, 25,000 ultrasound visits, 2,800 deliveries, and 3,000 gynecological surgeries annually. The department prioritizes teaching, research, and high-quality clinical care.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct primary health care to patients, collaborating with consulting physicians and the multidisciplinary health team.
• Conduct comprehensive or episodic health assessments and develop patient care plans.
• Order and schedule laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; explain their necessity to patients.
• Evaluate outcomes of care and initiate changes in the nursing approach accordingly.
• Participate in development of collaborative practice arrangements.
• Assume accountability for patient care in making decisions, prescribing appropriate medications, delegating tasks, and maintaining a comfortable environment for the patient.
• Collaborate with and act as liaison among the nurse, patient, family, physician, and community resources for coordination of patient care.
• Select appropriate communications approaches to achieve desired outcomes of patient care.
• Identify and participate in quality assurance issues on the unit.
• May participate in health education in the community.
• May participate in basic science and clinical research projects conducted by supervising physician.
• May prepare statistical reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
• Designs patient education programs that include information required to make informed health care and treatment decisions.
• Evaluates goals and outcomes taking into account the benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family, and the organization.
• Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient’s plan of care.
• Has a deep understanding and response to adverse drug reactions, with special attention to vulnerable populations such as infants, children, pregnant and lactating women, or older adults.
• Develops and coordinates APP training and professional development activities.
• Performs other related work as needed.

Requirements

• Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.
• Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline.
• Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required.
• Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO).

Qualifications

• Advanced nursing degree from an accredited school/college of nursing.
• Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc.
