Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner).

About the Role

As an Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner), you will perform medical examinations and assist with applicant medical processing at a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS). This role involves ensuring confidentiality, maintaining professionalism, and conducting comprehensive medical assessments to determine applicants' fitness for military service.

Responsibilities

• Perform applicant physical examinations in accordance with agency standards.
• Assist with applicant medical processing at a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS).
• Ensure the confidentiality of applicants and maintain professionalism in the medical department.
• Perform applicant medical prescreening as directed by the Chief Medical Officer.
• Conduct complete face-to-face medical histories on applicants who have completed the prescreen process.
• Complete all computer and non-computer based medical documentation in accordance with Command software packages and policies.
• Verify problems or conditions alleged by examinees and recommend further detailed exams if required.
• Prepare electronic and non-electronic documentation to assess applicants' mental and physical fitness for military service.
• Perform physical inspections of previously qualified applicants to document their status for enlistment.
• Perform a variety of professional direct health care duties within general medicine.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, including a completed background investigation.
• Possess and maintain a current, active, valid, and unrestricted license as a registered nurse and APRN as required by the state issuing the license.
• Possess and maintain a National Board Certification as a Family, Adult, Adult-Gero, Adult-Gero Acute Care, or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
• Possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• May be required to work on Saturdays and/or shift work (before 0600 or after 1800 hours).
• May require up to 90% temporary duty travel to other MEPS to cover staffing shortages.
• This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing.
• Credentialing will be required.
• Successful completion of applicable Military Health System (MHS) GENESIS Training within 30 days of onboarding.
• Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check as required by Public Law 101-647, Section 321 and Public Law 102-190, Section 1094.
• Must pass a National Agency Check with Written Inquiries (NACI).
• Must be able to pass a color perception (vision) examination.
• Pre-employment physical is required.

Basic Requirements for Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner):

• Education: A graduate or higher level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position (e.g., Acute Care, Anesthesia, Family, Geriatric, etc.). This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
• Foreign Degree: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. (Note: You must attach a copy of your certification.)
• Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination and possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. (Note: You must attach a copy of your license or registration.)
• Additional Licensure Requirement: Applicants must possess licensure or registration by a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States in the clinical specialty required by the position. (Note: You must attach a copy of your license or registration.)

Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Applicants claiming this exemption must meet the requirements below. (Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to validate your status.)

In Addition to Meeting the Basic Requirements:

• Professional Nursing Experience: One or more full years of professional nursing experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service, which includes:
  • Providing and/or coordinating patient care;
  • Conducting screening examinations;
  • Ordering and/or reviewing diagnostic tests to treat health conditions;
  • Maintaining patient medical records.

This definition of professional nursing experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12). No substitution of education for professional nursing experience is permitted for this job.

Foreign Education:

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
