About the role
The Advanced Coding Specialist is responsible for day-to-day tasks related to applying appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes for data retrieval, analysis, and claims processing for all inpatient and outpatient encounters while maintaining data integrity within the medical records and other facility systems, as well as the information exchanged between Sarasota Memorial Health Care System (SMHCS) and designated practice management facilities.
Responsibilities
- Apply appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes for data retrieval, analysis, and claims processing for all inpatient and outpatient encounters.
- Maintain data integrity within the medical records and other facility systems.
- Ensure accurate and timely submission of claims to insurance companies.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers to ensure proper documentation and coding practices.
- Participate in ongoing education and training to stay current with coding standards and regulations.
Requirements
- One of the following certifications by American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA): Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification.
- A minimum of six (6) years of work experience as a coder with a portion of experience in inpatient coding.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hospital inpatient coding experience.
- Inpatient Coding Microcredential certification.
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal, customer service skills, effective verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to interact with different departments and practitioners.
- Previous experience with Microsoft Office products, EHR software and Encoder systems.
- The ability to perform clerical duties and repetitive and detailed tasks.
- The ability to work independently, shift priorities, and demonstrate decision-making ability.
- Strong attention to detail, strong analytical skills, critical thinking skill set and understanding of healthcare documentation.
Education
Required: HS EQ: High School Diploma, GED or Certificate
Licenses and Certifications
Preferred: License and Certifications as per AHIMA requirements.
