About the role

The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Fellowship is a two-year, early-career training program (with possible third-year extension) for doctorate-level professionals (PhD, MD, DPhil, MBBS) focused on interdisciplinary health metrics research. Hosted at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) in Seattle, it combines academic research, professional work, education, and mentorship.

Responsibilities

• Educate and train in GBD methods, data analytics, forecasting, health financing, and quantitative tools through coursework and team-based projects.
• Prepare Fellows for faculty or research roles, offering opportunities to teach, mentor junior researchers, and publish.
• Participate in an intensive 2–3-week training camp taught by IHME faculty.
• Attend monthly seminars to discuss current articles about health metrics research.
• Participate in short courses on various health metrics topics.
• Receive mentorship from IHME faculty and senior researchers.

Requirements

• Have a PhD, MD, DPhil, or MBBS degree with a strong foundation in quantitative methods from a wide range of disciplines including epidemiology, demography, biostatistics, medical sciences, health policy, economics, mathematics, computer science, statistics, and other related fields.
• Have research experience, especially with data analysis and statistical methods.

Pay

• Year one – $105,000 (USD)
• Year two – $108,156
• Year three – $112,488

Schedule

• Full-time, 40 hours per week.
