About the role

Framingham Adult ESL Plus is a part-time, grant-funded program that offers classes at no cost to adult learners in the Metrowest area. The program offers morning and evening classes in English as a Second Language, High School Equivalency, and Citizenship, both In-Person and Online.

Responsibilities

  • Counsel students to help them understand and overcome personal, social, or behavioral issues impacting their educational experiences.
  • Provide immediate support to students during difficult situations that arise at school.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records for all students as required by school policies.
  • Conduct follow-up interviews with students to assess whether their needs have been met and to track progress.
  • Aid the administrative team with outreach initiatives and other student services as needed.
  • Collaborate with students, instructors, other counselors, and administrators to address and resolve behavioral, academic, and personal issues affecting students.
  • Assist students in developing personalized plans for their future educational and career paths, sharing necessary information with instructors.
  • Encourage students to explore various learning opportunities and persevere through challenging tasks in preparation for future educational experiences.
  • Provide students with essential information regarding college degree programs, admission requirements, financial aid options, trade/technical schools, and apprenticeship programs.
  • Help students evaluate their abilities, interests, and personality traits through tests, interviews, and professional resources.
  • Compile and analyze occupational, educational, and economic information to assist students in determining and achieving their career and educational objectives.
  • Conduct interviews to gather information about students’ employment history, educational background, and career goals, while identifying any barriers to employment.
  • Refer qualified students to employers or employment services for potential job placements.

Requirements

  • Have a Bachelor's Degree in Education, Counseling, or related fields.
  • Have experience with non-native speakers.
  • Have experience working with adult learners.
  • Bilingual in Portuguese or Spanish is preferred.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to present information clearly and respond effectively to questions from students, staff, parents, and community members.
  • Sound reasoning and problem-solving skills to evaluate information, define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and recommend appropriate courses of action.
  • Capacity to use professional literature, evidence-based research, and ongoing professional learning to inform instructional and practice decisions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with students, families, colleagues, and the community.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects.
  • Commitment to performing all duties in compliance with district requirements, state and federal laws, and Framingham Public Schools policies.
  • Demonstrated cultural proficiency and competence in working with students and families from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and student records.
  • Professionalism and composure in responding to unpredictable or challenging situations.
  • Proficiency in using technology and willingness to learn new tools; ability to operate a computer and utilize software, including Google Workspace for Education.
  • Willingness to plan, coordinate, and participate in ongoing professional learning, coaching, and staff development.
  • Experience in evaluating student skills, interpreting assessment data, and writing clear, concise reports.
  • Strong collaborative, instructional, coaching, and leadership skills to support student programming.
  • Ability to use data effectively to inform instructional decisions and improve student outcomes.
  • Knowledge of specialized content areas, relevant laws, and educational procedures.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons that align with district and school goals.
  • Proficiency in integrating instructional technology to enhance teaching and learning.
  • A proactive, reflective, and solution-focused approach to supporting student growth and success.

Benefits

The position is covered under Framingham School Committee Contract. This is a grant-funded position and, as such, is dependent upon the availability of grant funds. Employees are hired for one semester with the possibility of renewal.
