About the Role
This position serves as the primary clerical point of contact for personnel actions and administrative support within a federal office setting.
Responsibilities
- Initiate, track, and monitor personnel actions (e.g., hiring, promotions, pay issues) using automated HR systems; maintain personnel files; and assist supervisors with basic policy guidance and administrative documentation.
- Process, sort, and distribute daily physical and electronic incoming and outgoing mail and packages.
- Provide front-desk or visitor center coverage, responding to routine public inquiries via telephone, email, and in-person contact.
- Schedule and dispatch motor vehicles, monitor repairs, inspections, and maintenance, and maintain records to meet monthly reporting requirements.
- Prepare, edit, and finalize correspondence.
- Serve as collections officer, managing receipts, deposits, reconciliations, and transfers.
- Maintain the central filing system for official records, agency manuals, and directives; research and locate reference information; and resolve issues related to missing materials or filing errors.
Requirements
- U.S. citizenship is required.
- Cannot hold an active real estate license or have an interest or hold stocks in firms with interest in Federal Lands.
- Appointment subject to a favorably adjudicated background/suitability investigation.
- Resume must contain sufficient information to demonstrate qualification requirements as defined in the announcement.
- Direct deposit is required.
Qualifications
To qualify for the following grade levels, applicants must meet the corresponding experience, education, or combination requirements. All experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps).
GS-04
- General Experience: One year of general experience.
- Education: Two years of study above high school level (transcripts required).
- Combination: A combination of general experience and post-high school education totaling 100% of the requirement (transcripts required).
GS-05
- Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience comparable to GS-04, such as:
- Answering inquiries, greeting visitors, and routing mail.
- Entering personnel, customer, or transaction data into tracking logs or databases.
- Filing records and reviewing business correspondence for formatting accuracy.
- Processing point-of-sale transactions, collecting fees, and balancing a daily cash drawer.
- Education: Successful completion of a four-year course of study above high school (transcripts required).
- Combination: A combination of specialized experience and post-high school education totaling 100% of the requirement (transcripts required).
GS-06
- Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-05, such as:
- Utilizing automated systems to initiate, track, and monitor personnel, payroll, or business transactions.
- Coordinating vehicle fleet logistics, including scheduling dispatches, tracking maintenance, and compiling monthly reporting data.
- Serving as a collections officer or financial clerk responsible for receiving monies, logging deposits, and reconciling multi-account records.
- Independently auditing database files or filing systems to locate and correct missing records or transaction errors.
Work Environment
- Work is mostly sedentary, performed in an office setting with occasional carrying of light objects (e.g., files, books).
- No special physical requirements; normal safety precautions typical of office environments apply.
- Occasional travel may be required.
Education
Applicants may qualify based on experience, education, or a combination. Education is generally creditable up to GS-5, except where graduate education is directly related to the position. Transcripts are required if using education to qualify.
Additional Information
- These positions are temporary, expected to last up to 6 months, and have no promotion potential.
- Selected employees may be rehired for identical positions without further competition based on work needs or funding.
- Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of the Interior.
- This position is not eligible for telework.
