Job Responsibilities

A Surgical Technology Instructor is responsible for educating, mentoring, and preparing future surgical technologists for successful careers in both classroom and clinical settings. This role involves delivering high-quality instruction that integrates theoretical knowledge with hands-on clinical experience while fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment. The instructor develops and implements curriculum that aligns with program objectives and accreditation standards, ensuring students receive comprehensive education in surgical technology. They assess and evaluate students' cognitive, psychomotor, and affective learning outcomes to verify competency in safe, sterile, and effective operating room practices. Additionally, the instructor provides guidance, constructive feedback, and professional mentorship to promote student success, reinforce ethical and professional behaviors, and ensure graduates are well prepared to meet the standards and expectations of the surgical technology profession.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
  • Current credential in the field of Surgical Technology through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or another nationally recognized credentialing organization accepted by ARC/STSA.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of recent clinical experience in the operating room as a Surgical Technologist.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current surgical technology practice and clinical education.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, clinical instructors, and healthcare partners.
  • Ability to pass a comprehensive background check, drug screening, and maintain up-to-date immunizations required for local clinical sites.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Surgical First Assistant (CST/CSFA).
  • Associate degree in Surgical Technology.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Surgical Technology, Health Sciences, Education, or a related field.
  • Previous teaching or clinical instruction experience in a CAAHEP-accredited Surgical Technology program.
  • Knowledge of CAAHEP and ARC/STSA accreditation standards and clinical education requirements.
  • Experience serving as a clinical preceptor, mentor, or instructor in a healthcare setting.
  • Experience evaluating student clinical performance and collaborating with faculty to support student success.

Additional Comments

Adjunct faculty are compensated in accordance with Midlands Technical College’s established pay schedule. The standard adjunct pay rate is $57 per three-credit-hour course. Final compensation may vary depending on academic credentials and total course credit hours.
