Job Summary
The Department of Biology at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) seeks a student-centered and collaborative faculty member skilled in the scholarship of teaching and learning. The successful candidate will join an active and innovative department that engages in evidence-based instructional practices. The position involves preparing and teaching college-level biology courses, managing the learning environment, and assessing student learning.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Teach courses consistent with department procedures, appropriate Course Curriculum Outline (CCO), and catalog description.
- Teach assigned classes at the scheduled time and place and meet during required contact hours.
- Use appropriate resources and technology in the delivery of courses.
- Create an effective, supportive learning environment for students regardless of the delivery method.
- Maintain a safe and mutually respectful instructional environment.
- Prepare and submit incident reports to the Dean of Student Services for inappropriate student behavior as defined by the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy.
- Provide each student with an online syllabus (Simple Syllabus) at the first day of the course term.
- Demonstrate the incorporation of active and applied learning in courses taught (hands-on and engaged activities).
- Use a variety of appropriate assessments to evaluate student performance.
- Provide appropriate feedback on and return all assignments in a timely fashion per department standards.
- Inform students of progress to date periodically and assign and submit grades by published deadlines.
- Promote the development of critical thinking among students.
- Maintain student attendance records (for Financial Aid purposes) and grades.
- Respond to voicemail and email communication promptly within 1-2 contract days, with the expectation to resolve any outstanding student concerns at completion of semester.
- Collaborate with colleagues for instructional improvement.
- Maintain professional and collegial behavior including participating in department faculty mentorship program.
- Maintain professional appearance as defined by the discipline and/or College procedure.
- Promote support for the mission, vision, values, and goals of the College.
- Maintain necessary educational credentials, professional skills, and demonstrated teaching competencies consistent with department standards.
- Solicit feedback and implement suggestions from students and peers when appropriate.
- Expand knowledge in discipline and teaching craft on an ongoing basis.
- Complete required training and participate in professional development when necessary.
- Know and enforce FERPA guidelines.
- Provide ADA accommodations as requested.
- Communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, cultures, ethnic backgrounds, and abilities, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
- Work at 8 locations across the valley and capital city of Salt Lake with easy access to the Wasatch Mountains, world-class outdoor recreation, sporting events, museums, history, and arts and entertainment.
Knowledge & Skills & Abilities
- Understand that effective teaching goes beyond subject expertise to embrace the art of connecting with and supporting students from all paths of life.
- Be dependable and able to respond to student, department, and college communications within 24-48 hours.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States and maintain a permanent residence within the State of Utah as a condition of employment.
Qualifications
- Masters Degree in Biology in an accredited program or closely related field with 18 graduate credit hours of Life Science coursework.
