About the role

Adjunct Faculty are professional educators who work on a limited basis and have the primary responsibility of fulfilling Texas Southmost College’s (TSC) mission, vision, values and goals of providing a quality education for all students enrolled at the College. The relationship of the adjunct faculty member to the student is one of leader, teacher, advisor, and facilitator of learning. Adjunct Faculty members are responsible to the College President through a chain of command and are accountable to the College’s policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Strive for continual improvement of student success by planning an optimal learning environment; providing high‑quality instruction and advising; participating in the development of learning outcomes and assessment; and engaging in ongoing professional development.
• Manage learning environments by ensuring accurate syllabi that incorporate departmental, college and instructor requirements; maintaining attendance records; submitting grades; providing constructive feedback; and conducting classes punctually according to the prescribed meeting schedule.
• Deliver effective instruction by assuming primary responsibility for curriculum development in conjunction with college policies, ensuring rigor and quality; considering individual differences of students; using the College’s digital learning solution to meet course objectives; and communicating clearly about technology expectations.
• Enhance the student learning experience by integrating concrete, real‑life situations to encourage critical thinking, interdisciplinary skills and teamwork; employing methods that develop discipline‑specific and interdisciplinary academic literacy; and working with students and employers in occupational settings as appropriate.
• Collaborate with colleagues across the College in constructing and continuously improving measurable learning outcomes, including Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) core curriculum objectives and additional TSC objectives.
• Assess student learning by designing assessments that demonstrate growth; sequencing learning opportunities throughout advising, courses and programs; and aligning assessment with learning opportunities.
• Promote continual improvement as part of the teaching‑learning cycle by developing and revising curriculum as needed and using defined student learning outcomes to plan, document and evaluate teaching effectiveness.
• Support TSC’s institutional effectiveness program by understanding Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and Student Outcomes Assessment Plans (SOAPs); completing mandatory performance evaluation measures on time; sharing best practices with colleagues; and striving toward improved educational effectiveness.
• Support learning through student engagement by creating a positive classroom atmosphere that encourages active and collaborative learning, academic challenge, interaction, and support for learners.
• Maintain a learning‑centered environment by being available to students during designated work periods and referring them to appropriate student and academic support services.
• Pursue professional development by taking graduate courses or internal classes offered by the College or professional organizations, and by maintaining required professional credentials, licensing, and continuing‑education hours as disciplinary standards dictate.
• Participate collegially in discipline‑specific activities developed for adjunct faculty, as appropriate.
• Handle sensitive and extensive confidential information.
• Attend the workplace regularly, report to work punctually, follow a work schedule, and keep up with the demands of the worksite.
• Complete duties and responsibilities in compliance with college standards, policies and guidelines.
• Promote positive morale and teamwork within the functional unit and provide exceptional customer service to students, faculty and the community.
• Use interpersonal skills and sound judgment in interactions with coworkers, supervisory chain, faculty, staff, students, and customers.
• Complete all required training and professional development sessions sponsored by Texas Southmost College (TSC).
• Support the values and institutional goals defined in the College’s Strategic Plan.
• Assist with systematic review and evaluation of the planning unit, including development and monitoring of outcomes and improvement plans based on assessment.
• Work evenings, holidays or weekends as required by deadline requirements and special events.
• Perform duties within a high‑tech all‑digital environment.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Maintain required professional credentials, licensing, and continuing‑education hours as dictated by disciplinary standards.
• Engage in graduate coursework or internal professional development as appropriate.
• Handle sensitive and extensive confidential information responsibly.
• Attend the workplace regularly, report punctually, and comply with college policies and guidelines.
• Complete all required training and professional development sessions sponsored by TSC.

Physical Demands

• Frequent standing; occasional walking, sitting, reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, talking, hearing, tasting, and smelling.
• Frequent lifting/moving up to 10 lb; occasional lifting/moving up to 25 lb.
• Vision requirements: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Schedule

Working hours may include evenings, holidays, or weekends depending on deadline requirements and special events.
