Adjunct Faculty - Wind Symphony Director
Overview
The Department of Music at Harper College invites applications for an adjunct position as the Director of our Wind Symphony. We are committed to creating an inclusive and diverse educational experience that fosters creativity, expression, and a supportive musical community for students of varying cultures, backgrounds, and interests. We maintain a proud level of academic excellence. Our goal is to build academic and creative career paths for our students with opportunities to find representation and identity in their musical studies. Ensemble directors are therefore expected to possess expertise in their performance area and teach students on both the credit and non-credit sides, i.e., the Music Department and Community Education. They are also expected to explore non-western musical traditions and performance practices to reflect the changing demographics and comply with Harper’s commitments by including diverse teaching materials and repertoire. A main focus of this roll will be outreach, recruitment, and forging relationships with prospective students and community members. Other responsibilities include organizing performances and ensuring student participation. We care greatly about our surrounding community and have created a place for members to craft their musical interests into fruitful careers, personal enrichment, and stronger engagement with music.
Responsibilities
- Teach Wind Symphony and other ensembles on both the credit and non-credit sides
- Explore and incorporate non-Western musical traditions and performance practices
- Build academic and creative career paths for students
- Find representation and identity for students in their musical studies
- Engage with prospective students and community members through outreach and recruitment
- Organize and ensure participation in ensemble performances
Requirements
- Expertise in wind performance
- Ability to teach on both credit and non-credit levels
- Commitment to diversity and inclusion in music education
- Experience exploring and incorporating non-Western musical traditions
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
Qualifications
- Musical degree from an accredited institution
- Performance experience in wind ensembles
- Experience working with diverse student populations
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
- Knowledge of non-Western musical traditions and performance practices
