Grand Rapids Community College's Department of Social Sciences is seeking a dedicated Adjunct Instructor to teach Political Science class(es) in the fall and/or winter semesters at Middle College K-12 partner locations.

About the Role

Adjunct needs are determined on a semester-by-semester basis, including the number of sections offered. Classes are held at various times, locations, and modalities:

  • Times: Monday through Saturday
  • Locations: Main campus, lakeshore, and Middle College partners
  • Modalities: In-person, Online, Hybrid, and Virtual

Responsibilities

  • Teach GRCC Political Science course(s) at Middle College K-12 partnership locations.
  • Follow the required syllabus template and use the department-determined textbook.
  • Meet classes during scheduled times and for the duration required by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Clearly state course outcomes at the beginning of the course and define criteria for evaluating student attainment.
  • Foster an intellectually stimulating classroom atmosphere conducive to high academic achievement.
  • Maintain accurate student academic records and report grades by contractual deadlines.
  • Provide reasonable accommodations as approved by Disability Support Services in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Adhere to College policy on the Family Educational Right to Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Respond to communication in a timely manner and provide reasonable access to course information.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Teaching experience at a community college preferred.
  • Experience working with adults from diverse backgrounds and varying academic skills.
  • Commitment to professional development and continuous improvement in the field.

Skills

  • Demonstrated expertise in Political Science and a commitment to continuous professional development.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse student population and faculty team.
  • Proficiency in instructional technology and learning management systems (e.g., Gmail, Canvas, Blackboard).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Physical and Mental Demands

  • Some evening work (e.g., grading, preparing for class, responding to emails).
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods.
  • Understanding of and appreciation for the community college philosophy and student population.
  • Interest in working with diverse student populations representing a wide range of ages, ethnicities, national origins, and abilities.
  • Commitment to serving the Kent County community.
  • Responsiveness, initiative, and strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to perform routine and unexpected duties with flexibility and mature judgment.
