About the Role
The College of Arts and Humanities at Christopher Newport University (CNU) seeks adjunct faculty members to teach individual courses in the following areas:
- Arabic
- Chinese
- Classical Studies
- French
- German
- Latin
- Spanish
This opportunity is available starting Fall 2026 and beyond. Candidates must demonstrate excellent teaching ability and hold an earned graduate or terminal degree from a regionally accredited university in a relevant discipline, with 18 completed semester hours of related graduate coursework. Official transcripts will be required at the time of hire.
Pay
Adjunct pay ranges from $1,421 (Instructor rank) to $1,634 (Professor rank) per Lecture Hour Equivalent (LHE). New rates for the 2026–2027 academic year are subject to change.
Departmental Information
The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures (MCLL) at CNU is a team of 17 scholar-teachers committed to undergraduate education and professional growth. The department offers instruction in ancient Greek, Latin, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, and Spanish, as well as courses in English on the ancient and modern worlds. Programs include:
- Five majors
- Four interdisciplinary minors
- MAT degrees in Spanish and ESL
MCLL supports study abroad through short-term trips and advises students on longer-term cultural immersion opportunities. The department serves a significant portion of the student body through the second language literacy requirement in the Liberal Learning Core Curriculum. Faculty members publish on diverse subjects and mentor students on independent research projects.
