Responsibilities
- Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging, hands-on instruction in areas such as life skills, social skills, vocational skills, financial literacy, and personal safety.
- Create lesson plans, instructional activities, supplemental materials, and course syllabi in alignment with departmental guidelines and learning objectives.
- Create and maintain a welcoming, supportive, inclusive, and accessible learning environment that promotes participation, confidence, independence, and social interaction among diverse adult learners.
- Adapt teaching methods and materials to meet the needs of learners with diverse abilities, learning styles, and developmental levels.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, participation, and performance, and submit required documentation according to departmental deadlines.
- Foster positive relationships with students, encouraging respect, collaboration, and community-building.
- Collaborate with Lifelong Learning staff on curriculum development, course planning, instructional improvements, and departmental evaluation activities.
- Participate in professional development, mandatory institutional trainings, and other activities to stay current in best practices for teaching adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities.
- Respond to student emails and phone calls within 48 hours (excluding weekends and holidays); maintain regular communication using the assigned PGCC email account.
- Attend all required departmental and institutional meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Human Services, Adult Education, Psychology, Social Work, or related discipline. At least 1–2 years of experience teaching, supporting, or working directly with adults with developmental or intellectual disabilities. Relevant certifications or training in working with individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities are highly desirable. Experience designing and delivering instructional activities, life skills training, or vocational training in an inclusive and accessible learning environment. Experience creating inclusive and accessible learning environments, including adapting instruction to meet diverse learner needs. Experience in curriculum development for adults with disabilities.
Qualifications
- Knowledge: Understanding of adult learning principles and instructional strategies for learners with developmental or intellectual disabilities. Knowledge of life skills, social skills, vocational skills, financial literacy, and personal safety concepts. Familiarity with curriculum development and lesson planning for diverse learners. Awareness of accessibility practices, accommodations, and inclusive teaching strategies. Knowledge of assessment methods to evaluate progress and learning outcomes. Knowledge of best practices in behavior guidance, social skills training, and independent living skills. Familiarity with community resources and support for adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities.
Skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain concepts clearly and concisely. Ability to design and deliver engaging, hands-on learning activities. Classroom management and behavior guidance skills in a supportive, positive manner. Proficiency in adapting materials and instruction to meet individual learner needs. Collaboration and teamwork skills to work effectively with staff, caregivers, and community partners.
Abilities
- Ability to create a safe, engaging, inclusive, and supportive learning environment. Ability to motivate and inspire adult learners with diverse abilities. Ability to monitor, assess, and provide constructive feedback on student progress. Ability to respond flexibly and adapt instruction to meet changing needs or challenges. Job Requirements
- Physical requirements: Must have the use of sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public using the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. No significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions.
Other Requirements
- Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written standard English. As required by the 1986 Immigration Act, be prepared to present acceptable documentation showing your identity and that you are a U.S. citizen or an alien who is authorized to work. A background investigation will be conducted prior to the offer of employment. A signed authorization for the release of personal information will be required if selected for an interview.
