About the Role

The ELI instructor will provide integrated instruction in pronunciation, reading, writing, grammar, listening/speaking, and American culture within an intensive language program setting.

Qualifications

  • Earned Master’s degree or higher from a regionally-accredited institution in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Teaching Another Language, or a closely-related field required.
  • Alternatively, a Master’s degree in another field plus 18 hours of graduate credits in TESOL required.
  • Near-native fluency in English required (non-native English speakers may need to present an OPI score at the Advanced or Superior level).

Responsibilities

  • Uphold the best scholarly and ethical standards of the discipline.
  • Participate in professional development activities to identify and implement effective teaching strategies that foster student learning.
  • Foster honest academic conduct and ensure evaluations reflect each student’s performance.
  • Demonstrate respect for students as individuals and maintain a respectful classroom or online learning environment.
  • Treat all students fairly without regard to protected characteristics (e.g., race, religion, disability, sexual orientation).
  • Demonstrate mastery of course material and prepare all instructional materials (e.g., handouts, exams) in advance.
  • Teach courses in accordance with the Course Master and Department/standardized policies, while allowing for instructor-specific methods.
  • Hold student consultations and provide guidance to promote learning and success.
  • Meet all scheduled classes and final examinations as assigned.
  • Grade and return written work to students in a timely manner.
  • Maintain records of attendance, grades, and submit required reports by deadlines.
  • Develop and distribute a course syllabus following College policies and adhere to it throughout the semester.
  • Participate in the College’s course evaluation process.
  • Inform students of support services and recommend their use when advisable.
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings and maintain a professional demeanor with students and staff.
  • Notify the Associate Dean promptly if unable to meet a scheduled class; schedule personal vacations to align with College breaks.
  • Perform, analyze, and report assessment of student learning.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
