About the role

Established in 1970, Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) is one of 23 colleges in the Virginia Community College System, with seven locations across several counties, including Brunswick, Charlotte, Nottoway, Mecklenburg, Greensville, and Halifax. SVCC serves the largest community college region in the state, covering ten counties and one city. SVCC is located in a beautiful rural region renowned for its rolling hills, pine and hardwood forests, and farmland, and is home to two popular lakes: Gaston and Kerr. Responsibilities

  • Become familiar with the philosophy, objectives, and policies of the nursing program
  • Become familiar with the Nursing Student Handbook, the adjunct faculty handbook, and general college policies
  • Attend student and faculty orientations to the clinical area according to agency policy
  • Plan clinical rotation paths and select patient assignments that align directly with individual student needs and student learning outcomes
  • Provide continuous on-site supervision and guidance using components of the nursing process
  • Always remain highly accessible to students in clinical situations
  • Review clinical objectives with students
  • Conduct pre- and post-clinical conferences
  • Serve as an active professional role model and resource person
  • Review, correct, and comment on written clinical assignments, returning them to students within one week (prior to the subsequent clinical experience)
  • Evaluate and record student progress, conferring at midterm and at the end of each rotation, to outline strengths and targeted areas for improvement on designated evaluation forms
  • Maintain an optimal learning environment and cooperative relationships with clinical agency personnel
  • Promptly report student absences and any student problems/concerns occurring in the clinical setting to the lead full-time faculty or Program Coordinator/Director
  • Attend selected nursing faculty, curricular, or college meetings as designated by the Program Coordinator/Director or Dean

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) is required; a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN) is highly preferred
  • At least two (2) years of clinical nursing experience, preferably in the clinical area of teaching responsibility
  • Must hold a current, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the Commonwealth of Virginia (or multi-state privilege)
  • Maintain professional competence through ongoing nursing practice, continuing education, workshops, or academic courses
