About the role

This position involves preparing and teaching Introductory and Intermediate English Composition and other English courses under the mentorship of an FT faculty member. The position is based at any SLCC location and is a pooled position.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in and completes all requirements of Apprenticeship program.
  • Makes regular appointments with FT faculty mentor.
  • Fulfills the English course curriculum outline, prepares and delivers lectures and other classroom activities.
  • Keeps accurate classroom records.
  • Coordinates Student ADA accommodation requests following college policy and procedures.
  • Answers student questions and provides necessary feedback on student progress.
  • Supports the English department assessment initiatives.
  • Maintains College and department deadlines and evaluates student work in a timely manner, including submitting final grades on time.
  • Completes all required trainings.
  • Demonstrates and supports professional commitment to division, school, and college mission and values.
  • Becomes familiar with, and abides by, all college policies with immediate priority given to those policies that govern interactions with colleagues, staff, administrators, and departments throughout the organization.
  • Maintains professional etiquette in communications with students, staff, faculty, and administrators.
  • Provides appropriate and timely feedback for all assignments.
  • Returns graded assignments in a timely fashion per department standards.
  • Maintains student attendance records (for Financial Aid purposes) and grades.
  • Counsels students on academic issues.
  • Assists in maintaining a safe and mutually respectful instructional environment.
  • Prepares and submits incident reports to Dean of Student Services for inappropriate student behavior as defined by the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy.
  • Handles/responds to student concerns/complaints, and responds to student communications and inquiries promptly (generally within 1-2 days).
  • Maintains professional and collegial behavior.
  • Maintains professional appearance as defined by the discipline and/or College procedure.
  • Completes all required employee trainings.
  • Knows and enforces FERPA guidelines.
  • Provides ADA accommodations as requested.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Communicates effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Works with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
  • Maintains an on-site campus presence to encourage in-person relationships and create engaging, meaningful, and impactful learning experiences unless approved for on-line only courses.
  • Adheres to professional boundaries with all SLCC students.
  • Understands and enforces FERPA guidelines.
  • Provides ADA accommodations as requested.

Qualifications

  • At least a Bachelor's Degree in English, Composition, Writing Theory, or a related field.
  • Current enrollment in a graduate program with partner institution.
  • Accepted into an Apprenticeship program.
