USC’s Division of Media Arts + Practice, School of Cinematic Arts, is hiring an adjunct instructor for a four-unit 200-level undergraduate course, IML 230: Introduction to Visual Design.

About the role

This course blends history, theory, and hands-on practice to introduce students to the principles of visual and graphic design in media art. Students learn foundational concepts, theories, and technical skills using Adobe Creative Suite applications (Illustrator, After Effects, InDesign), creative process, and the visual designer’s workflow for conceptualizing and producing visual media. The course also explores career paths in media design.

Responsibilities

  • Teach foundational design principles, theories, and key ideas in graphic design.
  • Instruct hands-on technical skills in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, After Effects, InDesign).
  • Guide students through the creative process and project workflows for visual media production.
  • Introduce career directions for media designers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (minimum).
  • 5+ years of professional graphic design experience.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a media-related discipline (preferred).
  • Experience teaching undergraduate students (preferred).

Pay

$30–$45 per hour, based on experience, education, and other factors.

Schedule

31%-time adjunct position. Typically one course per year; exceptional cases may allow one course per semester with dean approval.

USC reserves the “Adjunct” title for faculty teaching less than full-time while employed full-time in a primary profession elsewhere.
