Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Follows the course curriculum outline, prepares and delivers lectures and other classroom activities.
- Prepares and administers student evaluations.
- Keeps accurate classroom records.
- Provides ADA accommodations as directed.
- Answers questions about courses.
- Follows SLCC policies and procedures.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities
- Proficiency in American Sign Language with demonstrated ability to converse fluently in high level professional and academic conversation in ASL required.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, culture, ethnic background, and abilities, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
- Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in American Sign Language, ASL education, Linguistics, or a related field (e.g. Deaf Studies or Deaf Education) from an accredited college or university is required.
- Teaching experience in ASL.
- Able to read and write standard English.
- Able to use computer technology and programs, including email, spreadsheets, and program specific applications.
- Demonstrably excellent communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in American Sign Language or related field preferred.
- Three (3) years full-time or five (5) years part-time college-level teaching experience in American Sign Language.
- Appropriate certification(s) also required such as ASLTA, CDI, RID, NIC (National Interpreter Certification) and membership in ASLTA and/or RID.
