Additive and Traditional Polymer Manufacturing R&D Technician (Research Tec 3/4)
About the role
The Engineered Materials Group (MST-7) is seeking outstanding candidates to support our group's current efforts in polymer additive manufacturing (AM) as well as traditional manufacturing methods and material characterization.
Responsibilities
- Support operations for multiple functions including powder mixing for additive manufacturing, machine troubleshooting, machine operation, material characterization, and compression molding.
- Contribute to the development of techniques and the fulfillment of research goals.
- Provide technical support for or conduct of experimental work in materials science; instrumentation installation and maintenance; data acquisition; analyzing or validating results and reporting data.
- Work as part of a team supporting the Advanced Manufacturing: Prototyping & Materials (AM:PM) and Materials and Materials Properties & Performance (MPP) teams.
- Support several teams within MST-7, primarily focusing on the Advanced Manufacturing: Prototyping & Materials (AM:PM) and Materials and Materials Properties & Performance (MPP) teams.
- Contribute to the advancement of the state-of-the-art in engineered materials to meet national security needs.
Requirements
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills in a technical specialty (not necessarily additive manufacturing).
- Solid understanding of technical concepts and designs.
- Work successfully in a team environment and exhibit collaborative behavior.
- Knowledge in computers, computer programming, and/or software applications used in R&D job function.
- Working knowledge of a variety of hand and machine tools.
- The ability to meet the following job duties:
- Maintain required safety and security training and ensure compliance.
- Take steps to stop work if unsafe conditions exist or security is compromised.
- Contribute to the development of techniques and the fulfillment of research goals.
- Perform some non-routine tasks requiring the exercise of independent judgment and work from general instructions for new assignments.
- May contribute to or co-author scientific publications.
- May provide original contribution or provide technical leadership.

- Able to obtain and maintain a "Q" clearance.
Qualifications
- Education/Experience at lower level: Requires an Associate's Degree and 3 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
- Education/Experience at higher level: Requires an Associate's Degree and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
- Desired Qualifications: Experience with or knowledge of manufacture of polymer materials. Demonstrated ability to work within a team. Active Q clearance.
- Additional Desired Qualifications for Research Tec 4: Demonstrated ability with AM or traditional polymer manufacturing or demonstrated ability to use advanced characterization equipment.

Pay
$66,100 - $103,600 for Research Tec 3 and $72,800 - $115,400 for Research Tec 4.
Schedule
Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
Location
The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM.
