Responsibilities
- Provide direct assistance and support to students so that they can participate as independently as possible in their least restrictive educational environment.
- Lead small group activities under the direction of the classroom teacher.
- Provide support for student communication, which includes using a variety of communication devices/systems.
- Provide accommodations and supplementary aids as outlined in the Individualized Education Program (IEP).
- Facilitate the student’s use of mobility equipment, such as wheelchairs, leg braces, walkers, and prone standers.
- Afford assistance and supervision during mealtimes, including support in obtaining food from the cafeteria, serving food, and facilitating self-feeding.
- Accompany the student on curricular/field trips to provide for personal needs.
- Support students in practicing goal-related skills during daily routines and collecting data.
- Encourage appropriate on-task behavior by the student through discipline and classroom/schoolwide supports, as well as individual behavior intervention plans.
- Implement refocusing prompts for students as necessary. Rephrase directions as required. Assist students with transitions.
- Establish and maintain a positive relationship with students.
- Assist students with aspects of toileting and self-care, such as diapering, lifting on and off the toilet, and changing tables/mats, toileting systems, and hygiene.
- Carry out special instructions regarding special physical handling, care, or exercises required by the student.
Qualifications
- Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent is preferred.
- Experience working with individuals with disabilities is preferred.
- Knowledge of school and classroom rules and activities.
- General knowledge of special education.
- Verbal communications skill.
- Interpersonal relationships skill.
- Support and assistance skill.
- Safety and disciplinary rules ability.
- Effective working relationships establishment and maintenance ability.
- Frequent physical activities classification as medium physical demands, including walking, sitting, bending, twisting, kneeling, squatting, reaching, standing, climbing, lifting, carrying, and related physical duties associated with assisting students.
