Part-time hourly position at the Senior Center in Fort Collins. Hourly rate: $21.50–$24.00, based on relevant experience.

About the role

Under the supervision of an Adaptive Recreation Opportunities Senior Specialist or Senior Supervisor, this position creates and guides individuals or small groups (up to four) with varying abilities through personalized workout programs to help them achieve their short- and long-term fitness and wellness goals. All duties are performed in a safe, enjoyable environment consistent with the stated values of the City of Fort Collins and the Recreation department.

Responsibilities

  • Design safe, effective 30-minute or 60-minute workout programs tailored to each client’s goals, fitness level, and abilities, including proper progression/regression and injury-prevention modifications.
  • Conduct sessions only at City recreation facilities, staying within the scope of practice defined by your certifications.
  • Establish rapport with clients through professional, positive, and motivating communication in person, by phone, and via email.
  • Listen to client goals and needs; provide a fun, safe atmosphere with appropriate language.
  • Communicate with supervisor in person, by phone, and via email; read and respond to weekly emails; check email for new client forms and contact new clients within 48–72 hours of assignment.
  • Schedule, prepare for, and begin/end each session on time; notify clients of any cancellations or rescheduling.
  • Complete and securely document initial interviews, assessments, and all required paperwork for each client.
  • Educate and enforce weight-room safety rules and proper use of exercise equipment; demonstrate and explain proper form, body alignment, and exercise modifications.
  • Monitor clients throughout sessions, correct form, provide verbal and safety cues, and offer proper spotting.
  • Verify that sessions or packages have been purchased; keep accurate records of client sessions, programs, and progress.
  • Maintain professional conduct in accordance with City and Recreation policies and procedures.
  • Provide customer service to other patrons by answering fitness- and facility-related questions; relay questions, concerns, and feedback to supervisor.
  • Clock in before each training session and wear the provided City of Fort Collins trainer shirt; follow all dress and appearance policies.
  • Lead weight-room orientation classes for youth and adults when requested.
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings; help maintain cleanliness and organization of weight rooms and equipment; clean and return all equipment used during sessions.
  • Maintain current Personal Trainer certification at your own expense; stay current on latest research and trends in training and specialization.
  • Understand and apply exercise science, nutrition, and wellness principles within the scope of your certification.
  • Provide First Aid to patrons or clients in the facility when needed.

Qualifications

  • Minimum age: 18.
  • Current national personal-training certification from a nationally accredited organization (or another association approved by the fitness coordinator).
  • Current CPR/AED certification.
  • Preferred experience working with individuals with disabilities.
  • Ability to work effectively and diplomatically with a diverse group of people.
  • Ability to react quickly and efficiently to safety situations.
  • Capable of learning and using adaptations, accommodations, and physical-assistance techniques required for individuals with disabilities.
  • Strong independent work ethic; establishes and maintains effective working relationships with co-workers, clients, and the public.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with both external and internal customers.
  • Sensitivity in working with all age groups, persons with disabilities, and a diverse population.
  • Ability to understand and apply department procedures and policies.
  • Tact and diplomacy in handling sensitive or stressful situations.
  • Ability to read and comprehend basic instructions, written correspondence, and memos; write basic correspondence; and present information effectively in one-on-one and small-group settings.
  • Ability to analyze moderately complex problems and apply standardized solutions.

Physical demands

  • Regularly maneuver throughout the weight room and facility.
  • Frequently communicate with clients.
  • Occasionally sit; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to focus.

Pay progression

  • Step 1 (Starting Rate): Performs duties as outlined; maintains communication with coordinator (reads weekly emails, responds to questions, reports feedback, keeps accurate session records, attends staff meetings).
  • Step 2: After 330 hours as a City of Fort Collins Personal Trainer, plus a favorable supervisor review and client feedback, continue duties and communication as in Step 1.
  • Step 3: After 700 hours, plus a favorable supervisor review and client feedback, continue duties and communication as in Step 1.
  • Step 4: After 1,250 hours, plus a favorable supervisor review and client feedback, continue duties and communication as in Step 1.
  • Step 5: After 2,000 hours, plus a favorable supervisor review and client feedback, continue duties and communication as in Step 1.

All steps are contingent on budget availability and current City policy. Previous experience may allow steps to be skipped with Area Manager approval.
