Acute Inpatient Registered Nurse- RN - Dialysis

Principal duties and responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care in multiple modalities including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, ultrafiltration, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), and apheresis.
• Supervise and direct Patient Care Technicians and clerical staff; provide direction and education to ICU staff for CRRT.
• Assess patients’ responses to therapy and adjust treatment plans as indicated by the credentialed physician.
• Communicate problems or concerns to the Inpatient Program Manager, physicians, patient’s hospital primary nurse, and others as indicated.
• Deliver safe, effective care in a timely and efficient manner; give organized, concise shift reports.
• Apply high-level thinking to shift patient schedules to meet needs of more critical patients based on labs, physician orders, or patient assessment.
• Implement, administer, monitor, and document patient response to prescribed intradialytic transfusions; notify physician and blood supplier of adverse reactions.
• Collaborate with physicians and healthcare team to interpret, adjust, and coordinate daily patient care plans.
• Accurately document all treatment information in the patient record (ACES) and the hospital record as needed.
• Clean and disinfect dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments per inpatient renal services policies.
• Prepare for dialysis treatments, perform required pre-treatment machine alarm testing, and operate related equipment safely; provide minor troubleshooting and efficiently utilize supplies.
• Conduct and document dialysis/apheresis machine safety tests, equipment calibration, dialysate testing, and internal/external disinfection; comply with FMS documentation/notification standards.
• Complete and document ongoing participation in QAI activities; participate in staff meetings and training as scheduled.
• Act as a subject matter expert to hospital staff for dialysis-related patient and equipment complications.
• Report all new or unusual incidents, information, complaints, or problems to the inpatient manager and other parties per Adverse Event Report requirements.
• May be assigned to in-center patient care on an as-needed basis.
• Review and comply with the Code of Business Conduct and all applicable company policies, local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
• Assist with various projects as assigned by direct supervisor.

Physical demands and working conditions

• Direct patient care and interaction with patients, outpatient clinicians, hospital staff, and physicians.
• Travel between assigned hospitals and facilities; travel to regional meetings/educational events.
• On-call rotation including nights, days, weekends, and holidays.
• Potential exposure to infectious materials and contagious diseases.
• Regular heavy lifting and moving of patients and/or equipment >200 lbs (with assistance); may lift chemical and water solutions up to 30 lbs as high as 5 feet.
• Employees must take the Ishihara Color Blindness test; failing the test does not preclude employment if reasonable accommodations can be made.

Supervision

Provides supervision and direction of Patient Care Technicians (Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technicians) and clerical staff; provides direction and education to ICU staff for CRRT.

Education

• Current appropriate state RN licensure.
• Maintains current knowledge in nephrology, especially inpatient care for hospitalized patients requiring varied treatment modalities (renal replacement, apheresis, ultrafiltration).
• Must meet practice requirements in the state of employment.
• Certification in Nephrology Nursing, Apheresis Nursing, or both is highly encouraged.

Experience and required skills

• One year RN experience required.
• Minimum 6 months nephrology experience required before working independently without other Dialysis RNs to provide dialysis and ultrafiltration services.
• Minimum 6 months nephrology experience required before working independently without other Apheresis RNs to provide apheresis services.
• Demonstrated strong assessment skills related to the critically ill patient.
• ICU experience preferred but not required.
• Successful completion of training course in the theory and practice of care of the ESRD patient – Progressive Renal Education Preparation.
• BLS CPR recognition; ACLS CPR recognition preferred but not required.
• Demonstrates organizational and time management skills; competency toward completing continuing and ongoing renal/nephrology education.
• Displays leadership skills and ability to direct and supervise others (PCTs, CCHTs, clerical staff).
• Successful completion of Nurses Technical Training.

Pay

Hourly rate: $33 – $55 (rate depends on work location and qualifications including education, experience, skills, and competencies).
