Acute Care RN-Medical Surgical Registered Nurse
About the role
The Registered Nurse position at MercyOne Genesis is part-time and shifts are rotating. This role focuses on providing and directing safe, effective, and culturally competent care for patients with acute medical and surgical conditions. The role involves assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care based on evidence-based practice and critical thinking.
Responsibilities
- Conducts an initial assessment to gather data and completes the admission assessment database within 24 hours of admission.
- Identifies patient problems, develops them into an outcome/goal-based plan of care, and incorporates relevant medical history into the plan of care.
- Analyzes and interprets assessment data to identify desired patient outcomes/goals and determines nursing interventions to achieve those outcomes/goals.
- Prioritizes patient care needs/activities, identifies and makes appropriate referrals, and educates patients and families.
- Collaborates with other health care disciplines to plan interventions/patient outcomes/goals, implements the plan of care, and coordinates care with the Case Manager, Social Worker, and other health care disciplines.
- Aids in decreasing the patient's length of stay by assisting with identifying and securing appropriate services upon discharge.
- Documents discharge instructions for patients and/or significant others and/or other care providers, evaluates patient progress, revises the outcome/goal-based plan as needed, and communicates relevant clinical information to the team and physicians.
- Maintains ongoing communication with interdisciplinary team members throughout the shift, at shift change, and during transfer of care.
- Demonstrates clinical competence, utilizes Patient Care Policies and Procedures, ensures medication safety, prioritizes and implements interventions according to patient assessment, and maintains a safe working environment.
- Manages telemetry and cardiac monitoring when applicable, demonstrates clinical competency and technical knowledge in cardiac rhythm interpretation and telemetry monitoring, recognizes and responds appropriately to cardiac arrhythmias and other changes in patient condition, and may assist with data collection and quality improvement initiatives.
- Provides appropriate interventions for patients experiencing cardiac events or changes in rhythm, maintains a working knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, and adheres to safety, infection control, and colleague health policies and procedures.
Requirements
- Associate degree in nursing required, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Current Iowa RN license (MercyOne Genesis - current Registered Nurse (RN) license in either Iowa or Illinois is required at the time of hire. A secondary RN license for the other state must be obtained within 12 months of the hire date).
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required, depending on the unit's capabilities.
- Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire.
- High language, intermediate to high math, and high critical thinking ability.
- Basic computer skills required.
Qualifications
Must be capable of managing multiple patients requiring continuous cardiac monitoring, provides appropriate interventions for patients experiencing cardiac events or changes in rhythm, and may be asked to participate in unit-based committees and provide education to nursing staff as requested. Additionally, the role requires maintaining a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures.
