About the role
The Benefits Actuarial department at Symetra is seeking an Actuary I to join the team. We are an inclusive and flexible environment that values diverse experiences and backgrounds. The role involves valuing and managing risks for our $1.3B book of group life, disability, and supplemental health business. The position is part of the Symetra Actuarial Student Program, offering exam support, mentoring, and opportunities to rotate through various actuarial departments.
What You Will Do
- Develop and maintain actuarial models for benefits valuation and risk management.
- Apply advanced analytics techniques, including AI, to perform experience studies and refine assumptions and models.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the accuracy and completeness of actuarial analysis.
- Drive automation of processes, strong data governance, and enhanced analytical capabilities to provide valuable insights to management.
- Commit to self-development, attaining industry knowledge, and passing actuarial exams to achieve actuarial designation.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior actuaries.

Who You Are
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent with strong quantitative background including college level mathematics.
- 6 to 9 years of insurance-related actuarial experience.
- ASA designation required, might have FSA.
- Creativity and flexibility to suggest and implement new techniques, software, and/or processes to improve business analysis.
- Strong communication skills, particularly as it relates to communication of technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Strong technical skills including managing large data sets and Excel.
- Able to solve complex actuarial problems.
- Basic knowledge of insurance products and the industry.
- Commitment to professional development and passing actuarial exams.
- Proficiency in SQL or Python is preferred.
- Experience with automation and process improvement is a plus.
- High school diploma required.
