Actuarial Internship - Summer 2027

About the role

Auto-Owners Insurance, a top-rated insurance carrier, is seeking a motivated individual to join our Actuarial Division as an actuarial (ratemaking) intern. This in-person internship offers the opportunity to create financial security by helping individuals and businesses make a new start when a loss occurs.

Responsibilities

• Become familiar with using and understanding insurance manuals and principles.
• Evaluate frequency, severity, and premium trends for purposes of projecting future losses based on historical loss data.
• Effectively communicate with other employees through verbal and/or written means.
• Organize and provide management with reports to aid in decision making.
• Participate in both formal and informal training sessions.

Schedule

• Full-time hours (Monday - Friday for 37.5 hours/week).
• In-person in Lansing, Michigan.
• Start times can vary; working hours should overlap with your mentor’s schedule. Common shifts include 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM or 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM.
• Interns choose their start and end dates, with most joining in mid-May and staying until mid-August.

Requirements

• Students must be working toward a bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science, Math, Predictive Analytics, or a related field and have completed at least two years of the curriculum.
• High aptitude for mathematics and actuarial sciences.
• Experience with statistical modeling and related software.
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Access.
• Above average communication skills (written and verbal).
• Ability to adapt to constant change and innovation.
• Must be able to work in the U.S. without current or future sponsorship.
