This role is for an Actuarial Director specializing in property and casualty insurance within the Risk Advisory practice. The position offers the opportunity to lead and grow a specialized actuarial capability, work collaboratively across disciplines, and shape service offerings while building client relationships. The role involves senior actuarial leadership, practice development, and the chance to influence the growth and direction of a dynamic advisory practice.
Responsibilities
- Lead and grow the property and casualty actuarial function within the Risk Advisory practice, including service strategy, market positioning, technical delivery standards, talent development and practice economics.
- Lead client engagements involving loss reserve and reserve adequacy analyses, pricing and rate reviews, actuarial examinations and regulatory support, rate filing reviews, external audit support services, large claim evaluations and related actuarial advisory work.
- Advise client executives and management teams on actuarial, financial and insurance risks, including the business implications of reserve development, pricing, claims trends, regulatory requirements and changing market conditions.
- Develop and apply actuarial frameworks and methodologies that align with client objectives, applicable actuarial standards and regulatory expectations, including work related to self-insurance, captives and IFRS 17.
- Provide senior-level consulting on complex actuarial matters, which may include expert witness and litigation advisory services, transaction advisory, due diligence, InsurTech initiatives and healthcare or self-insurance matters.
- Produce and review high-quality actuarial analyses, executive summaries, presentations and final reports, with engagement documentation maintained in accordance with applicable actuarial standards and Baker Tilly methodology.
- Drive business development by identifying, sourcing, pursuing and winning actuarial and broader insurance advisory opportunities; develop proposals and expand relationships with existing and prospective clients.
- Leverage your actuarial network to support practice growth, recruit and develop talent, and establish appropriate external referral relationships when client needs fall outside Baker Tilly’s service capabilities or applicable independence requirements.
- Collaborate with Baker Tilly professionals across Risk Advisory, assurance, tax and other advisory capabilities to bring integrated solutions to insurance clients while observing applicable professional and independence requirements.
- Manage engagement staffing, delivery, billings and collections, and achieve quality and profitability expectations across a portfolio of client work.
- Lead, coach and develop team members through Baker Tilly’s Care and Teach philosophy, providing timely feedback and helping professionals achieve their career goals.
- Represent Baker Tilly through executive presentations, industry relationships, thought leadership and other market-facing activities that strengthen the firm’s actuarial and insurance profile.
- Invest in your professional development through firmwide and external learning, professional organizations and continued engagement with evolving actuarial, insurance and regulatory practices.
Minimum Required Qualifications
- 4-year degree
- Twelve (12) years of experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics or a related field.
- Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS) designation required; an additional FSA designation is preferred.
- 12+ years of progressive actuarial experience, with substantial focus on property and casualty insurance, risk management and regulatory matters.
- 4+ years of experience as a client-serving manager or above within an actuarial consulting, public accounting or professional services environment strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated expertise in core property and casualty actuarial disciplines, including loss reserving, pricing/rate analysis and regulatory or financial reporting support; familiarity with applicable actuarial standards and insurance regulatory requirements.
- A successful track record of developing client relationships, originating new work and contributing to the growth of an actuarial or insurance advisory practice.
- Experience leading and developing professionals and managing multiple complex client engagements with accountability for scope, quality, budget and deadlines.
- Strong proficiency with actuarial modeling, data analysis and statistical tools; strong Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Word skills preferred.
- Excellent analytical, technical and problem-solving skills, with the judgment to identify significant issues and develop practical, client-focused recommendations.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex actuarial matters to client executives, boards, audit committees, regulators and other senior stakeholders.
- Ability to travel as needed to serve clients and support practice development.
Pay
The pay rate ranges for this position are as follows. Actual compensation is influenced by factors including applicant’s skills, prior experience, qualifications, degrees/certifications, work arrangements and geographic location. Baker Tilly offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits package to eligible employees.
- In Philadelphia, PA: pay rate range is $140,300 to $323,740
- In Iselin, NJ: pay rate range is $182,600 to $338,450
- In New York, NY: pay rate range is $240,000 to $367,880
