About the role

The Harlem YMCA is seeking an Activity Specialist to join the YMCA Afterschool staff team. This role supports children's learning, builds strong connections, and makes a real difference in the community.

Responsibilities

  • Create and deliver age-appropriate STEM instruction for school-aged children in the Y Afterschool program.
  • Plan and implement project-based STEM activities to engage and inspire participants.
  • Secure necessary materials, equipment, and technological resources for STEM projects.
  • Assess participant progress and engagement through formal and informal methods.
  • Prepare and organize an end-of-cycle showcase for participants to present their work.
  • Support participants in developing foundational academic skills and critical thinking abilities.
  • Maintain a strength-based, inclusive, and respectful environment for all participants.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians and caregivers about their child's performance and growth.
  • Adhere to all relevant standards, expectations, and regulations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • College credits and formal education in a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in the specific discipline of science, technology, engineering, or math.
  • Direct experience working with children under the age of 13.
  • General knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, leadership qualities, and comfort working with diverse youth and adults.

  • Ability to integrate foundational literacy skills into projects.
  • Experience promoting inclusivity and respect.
  • Knowledge of local and global scientific and technological issues.
