Activity Director

Job Summary

Directly responsible for the Activities Department. Maintains and supports the Activity Program's mission, philosophy, Alden policies and procedures, and state and federal regulations. Ensures the highest quality of life for each resident, understanding all psychosocial, medical, and activity needs/preferences.

Qualifications

• High school education or equivalent
• Three years of experience in group and individual activity programming
• Ability to read, write, and speak English
• Experience and qualified marketing skills to express the Alden’s Activity Program to various stakeholders
• Knowledgeable in activity programming with ability to communicate disease processes to relevant staff
• Possession of an associate’s degree, or education in Recreational Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Education, Social Services, or equivalent
• If lacking certifications, completion of the 36-Hour Basic Activity course within 90 days of employment and completion within 180 days
• Valid driver’s license
• Sincere desire to work with diverse populations requiring long-term or short-term care
• Knowledge and ability to guide and direct staff in therapeutic approaches for dementia and behavioral populations, if applicable
• Ability to make independent decisions for the benefit of residents, staff, and families
• Empathy, compassion, understanding, enthusiasm, and humor in interacting with residents, families, and staff
• Willingness to be flexible regarding work hours to ensure quality of care
• Understanding and management of emotional needs of self and staff

Physical Requirements

• Able to push, pull, or carry 50 pounds
• Intermittent movement throughout the workday
• Independent functioning, flexibility, personal integrity, and effective interaction with residents, family members, personnel, and support
• Good health
• Ability to relate and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and hostile individuals
• Exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including exposure to HIV, AIDS, and Hepatitis B virus

Essential Functions

• Establish and monitor achievement of facility and program goals through a team approach
• Develop and maintain a therapeutic person-centered activity program to enhance the quality of life of each resident and align with the Activity Mission and Philosophy
• Maintain all Activity Policies and Procedures and State and Federal regulations
• Conduct, oversee, and complete initial and ongoing assessments and MDS, CAAs, and care planning initiatives, including social, medical, cognitive, communication abilities, and spiritual needs, physical, neuro-psychological, and behavioral aspects
• Create, educate, and implement communication needs of residents, such as language services, communication boards, etc.
• Develop and conduct a resident activity orientation program to familiarize residents with the program's mission and procedures
• Gain detailed knowledge of each individual resident's background, cultural/ethnic background, interests, capabilities, and tolerance to design an appropriate person-centered activity plan
• Implement and maintain an 1:1 program as needed with ongoing assessment and placement in the program
• Develop, initiate, conduct, and maintain a volunteer program, which may include family and/or residents
