Active Transportation Planner (Transportation Planner II)

About the role

Since 1977, the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) has served the Fairfax County community by enhancing mobility, safety, and the quality of life of residents, businesses, and visitors through planning, coordinating, funding, implementing, and sustaining a multimodal transportation system. FCDOT is seeking a motivated, highly qualified, and public service-oriented Transportation Planner II to join the Active Transportation, Capital Projects, and Traffic Engineering Division. Serving as Active Transportation Planner, this position is primarily responsible for supporting the development, design, review and management of a diverse range of active transportation projects, plans, feasibility studies and programs, and addressing the needs of pedestrians, bicyclists, bikeshare users, scooter riders, transit riders, and people with disabilities. This position will also foster collaborative working relationships with local and regional stakeholders to advance bicycle and pedestrian transportation planning and implementation of projects in Fairfax County.

Responsibilities

• Developing scoping documents and reviewing designs for multimodal transportation projects including cycletracks/separated bike lanes, signage/striping improvements, shared micromobility stations, bicycle parking infrastructure, signalized and unsignalized intersection improvements, crosswalk improvements, shared-use paths, and sidewalks
• Preparing technical reports, conceptual design sketches, maps, tables/databases, correspondence, board items, meeting summaries, presentation materials, policy reviews/recommendations, and other materials for decision-making and presentation purposes
• Supporting community outreach, including development of educational and encouragement materials and activities regarding active transportation
• Attending community meetings and off-site meetings to present and discuss projects and promote active transportation
• Conducting field visits to evaluate existing transportation conditions
• Reviewing, summarizing, and investigating pedestrian and bicycle research, data, new technologies, and legal/legislative matters
• Responding to citizen requests and concerns related to active transportation
• Developing and reviewing Requests for Proposals (RFPs), scopes of work, project deliverables, budgets, and schedules, and administers consultant contracts for planning studies, feasibility studies and conceptual project designs
• Researching funding opportunities for bicycle and pedestrian transportation projects and programs through local, state, and federal grants and participating in the development of grant proposals
• Performing other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

• Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field; plus two years of professional experience in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field.
• Certificates and Licenses Required: Valid driver’s license
• Necessary Special Requirements: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a driving record check
