ACT Peer Support Specialist (26-116)

Full-time, non-exempt position within the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) department.

About the role

The Peer Support Specialist will assist individuals in understanding and using mental health and substance use disorders services, model competency in recovery, and demonstrate ongoing coping skills. This in-person role is based at 1131 Ionia Ave NW, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49503, with daily community travel required. The schedule is primarily Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with some evenings and weekends as needed.

Responsibilities

• Assist individuals in navigating mental health and substance use disorder services.
• Model recovery and coping skills for individuals experiencing behavioral health symptoms or crises.
• Demonstrate personal experience in managing complex mental health treatment services.
• Work effectively in a multicultural environment and bridge language or cultural barriers to services.
• Perform data entry, word processing, spreadsheets, and email tasks.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED.
• At least 18 years of age.
• Certification as a Peer Support Specialist or ability to obtain certification within the first year of employment by meeting the following:
  • Primary diagnosis of a mental health condition.
  • First-hand lived experience with a mental health condition causing substantial life disruption.
  • At least one year of mental health treatment or services, with a substantial life disruption due to the condition.
  • Personal experience navigating complex mental health treatment services.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for job-related use.
• Ongoing stability of symptoms and recovery to support others in crisis.
• Knowledge of mental illnesses, substance use disorders, recovery, and crisis planning.
• Computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, email, and data entry.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong problem-solving skills.

Pay

$17.24 - $22.86 per hour, with a 10% premium pay. The final offer is based on internal equity, skills, education, experience, and credentials.
