About the role
The Accounting Manager will manage the day-to-day accounting function for a commercial real estate company that sponsors and syndicates real estate investments through multiple property-level, investment, management, and holding entities. This role is responsible for accurate GAAP-based financial reporting, disciplined accounting operations, and reliable support for investors, lenders, property teams, and executive leadership. The ideal candidate combines strong commercial real estate accounting experience with hands-on Yardi expertise, understands the complexities of multi-entity and multi-investor structures, and can both manage a team and step into the details when needed.
Responsibilities
- Accounting leadership: Own the accounting function, establish priorities and close calendars, supervise accounting staff, and ensure work is accurate, complete, timely, and well documented.
- Multi-entity accounting: Maintain books and records for numerous legal entities, including property-level entities, investment vehicles, management companies, and related affiliates; manage intercompany activity, eliminations, allocations, and consolidations.
- Financial close and reporting: Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes and deliver GAAP-compliant financial statements, account reconciliations, supporting schedules, variance explanations, and management reporting.
- Yardi ownership: Serve as the accounting owner and subject-matter expert for Yardi, including entity and property setup, chart of accounts, workflows, user controls, reporting, data integrity, and process improvement.
- Investor and syndication accounting: Maintain accurate investor and entity records; support capital calls, distributions, investor capital-account reporting, ownership schedules, and waterfall or allocation calculations in coordination with finance, legal, and outside advisors.
- Property accounting: Oversee property-level revenue and expense accounting, tenant receivables, cash receipts, security deposits, operating expense and CAM reconciliations where applicable, and reporting for each asset.
- Accounts payable and vendor controls: Oversee invoice processing, approval workflows, coding, payment runs, vendor onboarding, W-9 and 1099 processes, duplicate-payment prevention, and vendor-record integrity.
- Accounts receivable and collections: Oversee billing, receipts, aging, collections, and cash application; ensure balances are actively managed and exceptions are escalated.
- Cash and treasury controls: Monitor bank activity and cash balances across entities, oversee bank reconciliations and transfers, maintain appropriate approval controls, and support cash forecasting and distribution planning.
- Debt and lender reporting: Maintain loan and interest schedules, support debt-service and covenant monitoring, and deliver accurate lender reporting and documentation.
- Acquisitions, dispositions, and financing: Support accounting setup and purchase-price allocations for acquisitions; coordinate accounting for refinancing, capital projects, and dispositions; maintain complete closing files and opening/closing balance support.
- CPA and audit coordination: Serve as the accounting liaison to the company’s outside CPA firm and auditors; maintain tax-ready books and workpapers; and manage schedules, document requests, deadlines, tax payments, 1099s, K-1 support, and resolution of open items.
- Internal controls and compliance: Develop and maintain accounting policies, segregation of duties, approval limits, documentation standards, and other controls appropriate for a growing real estate investment platform.
- Budgeting and analysis: Partner with leadership, asset management, and property operations on annual budgets, reforecasts, cash-flow projections, capital expenditure tracking, and budget-to-actual analysis.
- Team and service-provider management: Hire, train, coach, and evaluate accounting personnel; establish service standards; and manage relationships and deliverables across the outside CPA firm, audit, banking, software, and other accounting-related vendors.
- Continuous improvement: Improve the speed, accuracy, scalability, and transparency of accounting processes as the company adds investors, entities, properties, and transactions.
