About the role
The Accounting Manager oversees the organization's accounting and finance operations, focusing on grant and contract accounting, compliance with policies, procedures, and funder requirements, as well as internal and external reporting.
Responsibilities
- Lead the review of general ledger transactions and manage general ledger account reconciliations.
- Ensure accurate and timely month-end and year-end closes.
- Aid in the preparation of financial statements and cash flow projections.
- Manage budget-to-actual reporting.
- Support annual audit through preparation of audit schedules and liaise with external auditors.
- Lead the process of internal reviews.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards, including fund accounting.
- Manage project accounting of grants and contracts and collaborate with colleagues on budget development, financial tracking, and reporting.
- Maintain documentation for grant and contract audits and/or monitoring visits.
- Collaborate with program staff to ensure all expenses are necessary, allowable, allocable, and properly documented.
- Contribute to effective implementation of cost-recovery models.
- Oversee accounts payable process, including vendor payments and vendor statement reconciliations.
- Manage accounts receivable process, including invoicing and revenue tracking.
- Ensure proper coding of expenses to programs, grants, and contracts.
- Manage employee reimbursements and credit card reconciliations.
- Serve as a backup payroll processor and ensure supporting documentation is saved in the payroll system.
- Manage payroll transaction reviews and reconciliations.
- Contribute towards annual budgeting and periodic reforecasting.
- Aid in financial analysis to support strategic decision making, monitor financial performance, and identify trends or risks.
- Maintain and improve internal controls, financial policies, and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local nonprofit regulations.
- Support 990 process by preparing 990 schedules and reviewing draft 990 reports.
- Contribute towards a culture of continuous learning and process improvement.
Requirements
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting.
- Experience with accounting software and financial applications (e.g., Sage Intacct and Bill.com).
- Demonstrated advanced knowledge in Excel.
- Experience with diverse funding sources and knowledge of rules and regulations that apply to governmental, foundation, and corporate awards.
- Strong organizational skills that reflect an ability to seamlessly perform and prioritize multiple tasks with excellent attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Very strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with colleagues.
- Ability to maintain a high level of integrity and discretion in handling confidential information.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to translate financial information for non-financial staff.
- Demonstrated proactive approaches to problem-solving with strong decision-making capability.
- Ability to react with appropriate levels of urgency to situations and events that require quick response or turnaround.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business or related field.
- 3 - 5 years of progressive experience in non-profit accounting.
- 1 – 2 years of leadership experience.
Skills

$90,000 - $100,000 annually.
