The Role
The Accountant – Operating Expenses supports accurate accounting, analysis, and reporting of operating expenses, focusing on capitalization criteria under US GAAP. They assist with month-end close activities, prepare and reconcile operating expense general ledger accounts, and support expense trend analysis.
- Prepare and reconcile operating expense general ledger accounts.
- Investigate and resolve variances and reconcile items.
- Support expense trend analysis and provide explanations for period-over-period fluctuations.
- Ensure operating expenses are recorded in accordance with company policies and U.S. GAAP.
- Apply established US GAAP capitalization criteria to determine proper treatment of labor-related and other eligible costs.
- Support capitalized labor processes, including eligibility reviews, time-tracking data validation, and allocation calculations.
- Prepare capitalized labor journal entries and supporting schedules.
- Cook up with HR, payroll, IT, and operational teams to ensure accurate labor data and appropriate capitalization treatment.
- Aid in periodic reviews of capitalized labor activity to ensure compliance with accounting guidance.
- Support monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting related to operating expenses and capitalization activities.
- Maintain documentation to support internal controls and audit requests.
- Follow established accounting policies and procedures, escalating issues or questions as appropriate.
- Contribute to process improvements related to operating expense and capitalization accounting.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate Expense Accounting: Assist with month-end close activities related to operating expenses, including journal entries, accruals, and prepaid expense amortization.
- Capitalization & Capitalized Labor: Apply established US GAAP capitalization criteria to determine proper treatment of labor-related and other eligible costs. Support capitalized labor processes, including eligibility reviews, time-tracking data validation, and allocation calculations. Prepare capitalized labor journal entries and supporting schedules. Coordinate with HR, payroll, IT, and operational teams to ensure accurate labor data and appropriate capitalization treatment. Assist with periodic reviews of capitalized labor activity to ensure compliance with accounting guidance.
- Reporting, Controls & Compliance: Support monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting related to operating expenses and capitalization activities. Maintain documentation to support internal controls and audit requests. Follow established accounting policies and procedures, escalating issues or questions as appropriate. Contribute to process improvements related to operating expense and capitalization accounting.
What We Look For
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
- 2–4 years of accounting experience, preferably with exposure to operating expense accounting.
- Working knowledge of US GAAP, including capitalization and expense recognition concepts.
- Experience working within an ERP environment (i.e. NetSuite, Oracle, SAP, Workday).
- Proficient Excel skills and strong analytical capabilities with a detail-oriented mindset.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills and cross-functional collaboration.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating within a team environment.
- Familiarity with internal controls and audit support.
- Experience supporting or executing capitalized labor processes.
Requirements
- Required: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
- Required: 2–4 years of accounting experience, preferably with exposure to operating expense accounting.
- Required: Working knowledge of US GAAP, including capitalization and expense recognition concepts.
- Preferred: Experience in communications, technology, or capital-intensive industries.
- Preferred: Familiarity with internal controls and audit support.
- Preferred: Experience supporting or executing capitalized labor processes.
Pay
This information reflects the anticipated base salary range for this position based on current national data. Minimums and maximums may vary based on location. Individual pay is based on skills, experience, and other relevant factors.
